TA_288-94H Camshaft

    Ranger, I have a second gen set of ported Bulldogs with the 2.19 intake and 1.81 exhaust, and had them flowing 321 and 218 at .500. Still using them on the pro touring manual sick speed car. They were cc'd to 64, but don't recall what the initial numbers were. FWIW, FJ Smith Racing, who ported them, was impressed with the low lift numbers to .500 so a lower lift cam may be consideration for you.

    It's interesting to hear that someone has a theory that the 1.81 valve is a detriment to flow on our engines, when the Bulldog valve arrangement is used on Mopar big blocks with the same 4.35 bore as our .038 over 455 and showed increases in power.

    Thanks for your input. Gessler always warned everyone not to compare flow numbers, as different benches (and operators) would give varying flow numbers. I think toward the end, before he quit, he had calibrated his bench w/ several other "big names." My intake number was 310 @ .500, probably close to use, given a margin of error.

    Good to know about the good, low-flow numbers. I hadn't heard that. I'm using a 288-94, and I think that lift is .500, or a wee bit less, so I think that would qualify as a "lower-lift" cam?

    Yeah, it mighta been Gary (or not) who told me the bigger valve made the contour of the exhaust port either harder to port, or just not amenable to good flow. Glad to see there are other opinions.

    Hugger, in one of his posts, recently called the Bulldogs "junk." I thought that was a little harsh, tho they did have several issues (poor oil drainback, incorrectly drilled alternator hole), but I know the 2nd Gen was better than the 1st, which sometimes suffered from water leakage behind the dipstick area. I guess the casting was too thin.

    Yeah, wonder what the initial CC was of your chamber, but I think Gary is trying to find out.

    Don't know if you know Larry Bell's yellow 67 Corvair on a G body frame, with 1st Gen Bulldogs on a 455 + .030 & Lunati 231/239@.050 .500 lift cam, ran high 10's, 123mph . Hot rod magazine quoted he estimated his power to be 550, with 10.2 CR.

    Head cc is 61. They were cut about .004" to assure flatness. Thats 1 cc.

    Ranger. Fyi. Needed to work the ex seats to get over220. I believe your ex. was about 210. Same intake flow

    Gary,

    Thanks so much for taking the time to do that. That means I will have some "serious" compression. Wiesco flat-tops, .020" in the hole, std. head gaskets. I'm pretty sure will be around 11.5 to 1. Thanks, again!
