Probably at least half of the 350 owners on the forum have one. One of the first things I did with my Skylark. What do you want to know? It’s well made, fits right, works well, is easy to install, lops about 40 pounds off your engine weight.
You answered nearly all my questions which carburetor are you using? I have a 2 barrel on mine, is the fuel consumption significantly higher with a 4 jet?
Heard it’s even better because of the smaller quadrajet primaries, but someone back me up here if I’m right
Do not buy it based upon projected fuel savings. Unless you are different from others, with a four barrel you will have your foot in it more and burn more fuel.
When I purchased the Skylark, it had the stock iron two barrel intake, a lame/cheesy 2 to 4 barrel adapter and a small 500 cfm Edelbrock carburetor. I kept the Edelbrock since it works ok for a mostly stock engine and I already had it. I agree with Flynbuick, the main reason to do this swap isn’t potential fuel economy benefits, it is improved performance. In my case I didn’t notice a fuel economy difference, probably because I am still using the same little Edelbrock.
You may want to ask these questions upstairs in the small block section . Probably get more responses and a broader range of ideas . They will recommend a 750-800 cfm carb depending upon engine mod's . Or maybe a mod can move it if needed ? And , give that Edelbrock 500 a quick rebuild and run that until you decide on carb choice . You already have it = $0 . Also do not just trash or give that 500 away ( unless it's to me of course ! ) Those are not as common as the 600's and the stock small block guys like em and people look for them for dual quad use .
That kit from TA includes an Edelbrock carb, which a lot of the guys on this forum will say is not a good choice for a Buick engine. I ran a rebuilt Q-Jet myself but my engine blew a freeze plug and is apart so I never really got to tune the Q-Jet to the engine and therefore can't really give an accurate A/B comparison of the Edelbrock I had before that. But a Quadrajet is what most people on here will recommend for a stockish SBB 350!
I would not waste the money on a universal edelbrock carb. Contact Quadrajet Power or Everyday Performance for a carb. They get the fuel curve closer to what you need. . They may have a core. Otherwise with the you will be changing metering rods and jets yourself . You may need a 4 barrel accelerator cable. 4 barrel Has more travel. Get a distributer recurve kit. Bring timing in around 2600 rpm . Try to get full mechanical timing up near 30-32 and see if engine likes it. I would get a 23-2400 converter also.
