im looking into upgrading/updating my 67 special. im looking into "package" deals and i think ive narrowed it down between sc&c's touring package http://scandc.com/new/node/735 umi's handling package stage 2 http://umiperformance.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_253_277&products_id=804 any recommendations? i like how umi looks to be more comprehensive than sc&c although i really like the hellwig bars. im not absolutely set on package deals but as you guys can see between the two examples ive given i have a budget and would like to get as much as i can out of it. maybe i could start with sc&cs "the basics package and build from there? http://scandc.com/new/node/766 any advise for a newbie would be greatly appreciated.
I don't have the SCandC total package, but I have the SPC upper arms and tall joints, plus the SPC springs and vari shocks in the rear. They are all fantastic products. The SPC upper arms really stand out since they are fully adjustable. The range of adjustment is huge, so say goodbye to those nasty alignment shims.
Every bit of suspension on my car was sourced from UMI. Front control arms, rear setup, sway bars, viking coilovers, etc. Every piece I've put on has been extremely well made and performed great. Not to mention the guys over at UMI offer great customer service and really stand behind their products. The SC&C stuff has great reviews, but I just wanted to utilize a suspension setup that was designed and tested by one manufacturer and as a complete unit.
Try Tony G @ ABC performance he has complete suspension as well as frame boxing kit, look on his facebook page and look at the LS9 Chevelle, my vehicle he is an ex GM Frame engineer.
Looks like some good stuff there as well. I do really like that rear coilover setup he offers with the integrated frame bracing.
I would recommend SC&C. I have his setup on my GS. If you were at the Nats last year, you may have seen me running the autocross. Marcus at SC&C will spend time with you on the phone discussing your setup at great length. He has helped some of the manufacturers he sells design some of their products, and is extremely knowledgeable. He has also written a book on how to get your muscle car to handle. It is a good read. I have only bought one item from UMI, and that was lower control arm relocation brackets. They did not fit well, and required me to drill new holes to correct a geometry problem they created (brackets moved the rear end backward and created a tire/fenderwell interference problem. I called them about that, and they were clueless. It would be interesting if someone were to show up at this year's Nats with the total UMI package, so we could see which is fastest!
I'm in the middle of a motor swap and front disc conversion and would like to get something to hold all this together. For now I have to run with the 3 on the tree with the stock 8.2 so no autocross or anything, at least not for now.
I'll throw some love out to Hotchkis and Ride Tech. You won't believe you're driving the same car. My advice is to choose a vendor and stick with them - don't mix and match and then expect everything to fit. I like UMI too. Just be realistic about your needs and how you will drive the car. It doesn't take a whole lot to fix how these cars handle for the street.
Jeff nailed it. Cool thing about Marcus is that he sells ALL of those brands, and will steer you towards what is right for you.
