Hi , I still have my original set of 14 Super Sport Wheels that came with the Buick GS in 1971. Since those original trim rings are in a not so good shape anymore, I wanted to ask if you know/have the original GM parts number to themthey seem to be a stepped edge design, right? Most trim rings I`ve seen are smooth edge . Any help appreciated Jens
This has been brought up many times . The 1968 firebird 14" rings may b the same. Wheel vintiques may sell them. I have a set of Super Sport's. I think they are the greatest. Not many people dig them. I bought (2) 14x7 of eBay one the guy found on a shelf at a dealership brand new used. Had original lacquer Grey Mettallic on it. With a nice shine. Not flat. So I matched one of my paint deck chips to it and duplicated the color. The rim even had the part number on the back side written in chalk How cool is that. So all four I chalked the number on all the rims.
Hi Steve, you got that right, I`m coming to believe they really look cool, too. My set has been color-matched to the car on it`s way, but the spare tire still is all original (black, as a matter of fact) with the SS wheel and the original bias ply spare etc. Thanks for the hint with the trim ring, I`ll check it out. I`ll post a picture of the GS 2 weeks after delivery, the rims just look great, I think ! Jens
I had the original set with my 71 Stratomist blue 455 4 speed and I loved them. Wish I had never sold that car. I remember the color being a little darker than the "normal" Argent Silver typical of steel ralley type GM wheels. scubasteve455, maybe if you have a chance post a link or the color formula you used and the part number for prosperity, I don't need it but I'm sure others would appreciate it. Great thread!
Seems they were not all created equally, I`ve seen some pics of grey-ish looking ones, there`s this press foto of the 1972 GS http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fa6ry_Zr9NU/T-0HSMlJQ_I/AAAAAAAAAaM/N5aImQQ-hBg/s1600/72+GS+pic+d.jpg The ones on my car where black though, the spare still is, the early picture shows the delivery status, and I`ve seen one other GS in France riding on those wheels, also black. But the grey color looks quite good, very interesting.
George! Awesome ! Timely! Rare! Don't see many. I had plates welded on back of (2) of mine for Disk brakes. The drum brake cars did not need the plates to clear the calipers. My rims are heavy duty now . The other (2) rims had the factory plates on.
These are the wheels that belong to scubasteve455. They really look great and I enjoyed Steve telling me about them, especially the rare factory NOS unit and the one 14' X 7" wheel in the pic with all 4 rims. The 14X6 Wheel part number is shown in the last pic and is #1239492.
Don't know why the color looks different from factory wheel and the one that I painted but must be the photo. Color was right on. Thanks for posting pic's Craig
