    Hello V8buick.com members,

I own a 68 Skylark Custom convertible with the original 350 2bbl. I'd like to put some money into it and get more power out of it. The only thing I've done was install dual exhaust with super 10s flow master. I would like to eliminate the exhaust smell inside when driving long distances with the top up, so I'd appreciate any recommendations. I was thinking of giving TA Performance a call to see what they recommend as well. I'm not looking to go super extreme or race it, I'd just like it to sound mean when idling, pick up and go when I want it to and look super nice under the hood. This is how it looks right now. Also, any shops recommended in the Bay Area? Thanks!!

Your car looks sweet!! If you put the exhaust together with clamps, it might be leaking at the joints. I got my exhaust system from T/A including down pipes from the iron manifolds. It fit nice and I installed it all with the supplied clamps. Didn't think it leaked, but always seemed to smell exhaust after cruising. Last weekend I went for a drive and after I got home decided to look under the car at something else and could see a bit of black at a couple exhaust connections. So I guess it's been leaking a little all along. Thinking about getting it all welded up. Just a thought.

The only time you smell exhaust is if it's leaking somewhere, or if it makes your eyes water your carb needs rebuilt/tuned. My car you couldn't smell a damn thing. You could be locked in a room with it and actually be able to breathe and not have your eyes water. meanwhile, I almost bought a 350-2 from a guy with an apollo and that thing ran like crap. even with his big bay door open i was choking and eyes were flooding.

Do you have turn downs after mufflers or full tailpipes out the back? If you’re getting exhaust smell you have a big leak somewhere or your engine is out of tune really bad. Tailpipe out the side of car isn’t a great idea.
first up I would recurve distributor for a faster advance curve with alittle more initial timing. It will improve power and mpg. A 350 transmission upgrade. You may have a 2 speed trans if its automatic transmission . A extra gear with deeper first will accelerate better and improve some around town mpg. It should be a direct swap except for accelerator cable. Goes to gas pedal. you can add a 2000 torque converter also.
A 4 barrel intake and carb would increase some power also. You will need a 4 barrel accelerator cable. The 2 barrel engine has about 8.2 compression. Have heads milled or resurfaced . .030-.060. For more compression.
.030 should net about 8.75. .060 should net about 9.2. A ta 212 cam or the crower level 3 cam advanced 4 degrees will be strong here with alittle sound. Get a factory quadrajet carb or get an air fuel meter to tune what carb you do get. Rejetting will be require
. I personally would do some oiling modifications and a ta backgrooved front cam bearing. Or at least a new cam bearing with a cam change.
