2 years ago,my brother was in an accident with his 69 Cutlass W-31

he received a $12,500 settlement from the insurer, and asked Steve Hunkins to fix the car

instead of putting the funds in the bank,Steve Hunkins had my brother sign settlement check over to him (mistake #1)

my brother didn't offer him the settlement check,Steve asked for it.

Steve Hunkins wrote no estimate of cost of work,no invoice, and no receipt of receiving the settlement (mistake #2)

Steve told my brother he was going to cut the body at the windshield & pedals,

and weld the back half of a rust free Nevada shell my brother had purchased from Nevada

my brother, thinking they were in the same car club, thought there was no problem.(mistake #3)

after 2 years,my brother decided to go in another direction.

he is approaching 70,and decided he wanted a car to drive now, instead of waiting for the w-31 to be completed

he asked Steve for the return of funds, less his labor and storage fees.whatever is fair

Steve got upset, said we can take the car now,and wouldn't allow me to take pictures of the car

when i stated we can take the car right now,he told me to leave the property

Steve then told my brother no problem.give him a few days to get the money together, and pick up the car Friday

Steve called, rescheduled the pickup day to Saturday

we went to pick the car up today, and an attorney was present

Steve refused to let my brother have his own vehicle unless he signed a release

my brother signed the release, and we took the car home.

the car had been stripped of the interior, front clip removed, fenders hood and doors dipped and primed

steering column locked in the trunk(thanks a lot)

then sat outside for 2 years to rot

this is a prime example of poor communication and a dishonest service provider taking advantage of my naive brother

my brother is not on the internet, and not savvy to the sharks out there that prey on guys like him

    these are all facts

Sad story. I hope you find resolution.

Don't they have consumer protection laws in America? I'm sure they do and it should be your first point of call. In all first world countries I know of, ripping off the consumer is illegal and there are safeguards in place to stamp it out and bring these people to justice!

Andy bashes others with vendor problems, but looks for sympathy for his problems.

    Can't have it both ways.

my brother offered to resolve this.

it was Steve Hunkins' decision to refuse to work things out

now his building is shuttered, signs have been removed

state of Ohio dept of taxation says he hasn't had a business license in Ohio since 2010

this guy has never owned a body shop, but writes an estimate for body damage?

lady from the state seemed very interested in seeing the estimate he wrote to fix my brother's car

and also the $12,500 cancelled check he cashed from the insurance company

since it is considerred un reported income

Good luck dood, hope it has good outcome but it's awfully hard to squeeze blood out of a turnip. I'm willing to bet this guy is broke and saw an opportunity to start climbing out and ran with it. Just sayin'

Smokey15 So old that I use AARP bolts.

Have your attorney demand a list of all this dickhead's assets. If anything has been 'gifted', sold cheap, etc. in order to hide assets, the recipient of them may be held accountable as a knowing accomplice and have to forfeit them.
