The steel ring around the steering wheel on my 70 GS has become detached. It is in one piece and still round. Anyone have an idea on how I should put it back on the steering wheel so that it will stay put?
Is it an original 16" Rallye wheel? This is a common thing with them. What happens is the wheel shrinks a little, the ring gets loose and will sometimes fall off. If you have the ring and it keeps falling off, you can have it cut and then welded back together a little smaller. Then warm up the band, throw the wheel in the freezer, then quickly push the ring onto the wheel and it should be all right. Duane
Thanks Duane. It is a standard 16 inch rallye wheel and I have never had this happen to me before. I was thinking about gluing it somehow but that doesn't sound like a very good option.
The problem is the oils have come out of the wheel and it has shrunk just a little. You cannot simply glue it as it has become loose, and is now a larger diameter then the wheel. You can try, but I don't think it will work. For the guys that lost their 16" rings I used to sell them 2 of the 15" stainless rings so they could get them welded together and put them on the wheels. The freezer trick works great. Duane
Interesting - I have one w/a loose ring (of course not sticky) & never considered that the wheel itself had shrunk. Like Dave, I figured it was just a matter of gluing it back. The wheel is super "dry" feeling and was (is) on a car that was probably not stored in optimal conditions for decades.
The 69-70 16" wheels seem to shrink and get really hard. I don't know if they changed the plastic in 71, but those wheels hardly ever shrink and lose their rings. Duane
