Just completed my power steering swap and want to take care of the slop in my steering wheel. Its a 64 lark with an aftermarket wheel and whenever you would turn in I would hear a grinding noise. It ended up be the piece that slips over the column so I pulled it all apart. The turn signal switch is pretty beat up and it looks like there is a non replaceable bearing mounted inside of it. Its really sloppy so I assume the whole piece has to be bought and installed with the harness. Also in the diagram in my service manual there is turn signal canceling part and also some spring in which I have neither. Does the bearing in the turn signal switch keep the shaft straight within the tube or do I need to dig deeper in this thing most likely. The turn signal switch still works so i would hate to buy a new one if this likely isn't the culprit.

I am also going to a floor mounted shifter and I have the gear selector piece off the column as well. Do I need to buy another piece that will slide over with the column without arm mount or is a whole new column needed?

    Thanks

I don't know all the answers but the column shifter and floor shifter piece are interchangeable.

I will have to keep my eye out for one although its not a huge deal. I hope someone can answer about the turn signal switch bearing and if that is what keeps the steering wheel shaft centered within the column. Also I need to know what that spring is I am missing as well and canceling cam.

Got the steering back together but something is a miss. How does the column go back together, I took pics when it came apart but something is off? The gear selector slides on and then you need to slide on the whole turn signal set up which is the gear selector locking mechanism that is attached to the turn signal bowl with switch inside correct? The bowl is loose and I can move it around so something is not together right. My 64 manual doesn't break it down with the piece that is connected to the outside of the bowl that slides into the gear selector for some reason so I'm not sure how to lock into place properly.

The only columns i ever had apart were a Dodge van column once and a couple Ford truck columns. Besides the tilt feature i would imagine they are all fairly the same and yes, i do remember the turn signal assembly also being the upper bearing to keep the steering shaft centered. I remember the Fords had plastic tabs the locked into the column tube and you were able to turn the signal assembly in the tube unlocking it and the sliding it up out off the steering shaft. Its been at least 15yrs since having one apart and to be honest i cannot remember why i did it.

I have done it twice correctly prior to this on this car but for some reason I can not do it. I think my issue lies with the locking plate that attaches itself to the turn signal bowl. I can't get it to lock into place properly and I do not remember exactly how I did it before. I remember putting the locking plate in before then putting the bowl on and screwing everything together but its just not happening now. I tried screwing it all together first then putting it on while twisting it to lock into place but it still detaches itself. I'm lost

  7. Having same issue, did you figure it out?

This is an old thread and the OP has not been back on the Board in 3 years.
