Steering Column compatibility (74 for 71 Riv)

I drove a good distance to get one so I didn't have anything to compare it to. The top one is from a 71-73 and it looks like the one in my 71. The one on the bottom is from a 74 and while the connector is the same, the wires look they've been hobbled. Is this the way they came from the factory? Does this look right? I thought all full-size 71-76 were the same but I"m wondering if I should even try with this 74 one. (It is not an airbag steering wheel - normal size, same as my "Deluxe" 3-spoke wheel)

    Thanks.

It's definitely been worked on. I believe the 71-76 is the same, however different options would require different wiring set ups.

Well poop, I think I'm 0 for 2. My first mechanic didn't like the first one (top one). I'm probably not going to take a chance on the 2nd one... anyone else have a floor-shift 71-76 Riv column for sale?

Looks like someone at one time put a turn signal switch in the bottom column. They just didn't know how to do it so they cut the connector off and then spliced it together . Why don't you like it ? All you have to do is install a new turn signal switch the correct way.

Measure the total length and where the "cinch bolt " groove is as compared to your original column. 71 to 76 should be the same.

Hate to ask a potentially dumb question, but there are a few guys around here that would probably be dying to know: (I'm one of them, I'd like my suspicions cleared up) What is the right way to change out that switch? Take apart the connector clip? Unclip each lead from it, and then slide and snap them back in again?:Do No:

It depends. You have a 66 listed as your vehicle Marc. On yours you record the wire color and where they are on your connector. Yours should be a arc of a circle shape. Then you take each wire out of the connector by bending the lock tang back in the connector. Then fish the wires down from the top as you install the switch. Then you just put the individual wires into the correct slot of the connector.

On the newer column's as the ones shown in Peters picture the plug is a long and flat connector. After removing the 4 bolts holding the bracket to the column its a pretty easy to fish the plug and wires down the column as you install the switch. You have to have the plug oriented the right way and you press all the wires coming out of the plug flat along the plug at a 90 degree angle as close to the plug as possible. . You might have to jiggle them a little but it will go thru. you can see when you remove the old switch how the plug and wires need to be oriented. Its not really hard. Once you do one you will see.

And Marc . There are no dumb questions .

Gary - text message sent. Not sure why I can't insert carriage returns, < new paragraph > To everyone else - thanks for all the info. I am not handy and in NO position to start working on these things... really hoping for a plug-and-play column. If anyone is interested in the blue one that's been hobbled, PM me and I'm willing to let it go for a reasonable price. Blue one has tilt but no cruise, but includes steering wheel - regular 3 spoke of the day with the -R- logo. I can send pix from home later.
