Most of the A bodies have the gas fill behind the plate. The station wagons have a regular fill door on the drivers side quarter. The fill tube goes down behind the rear wheel opening and is connected to the tank via a short rubber hose. In addition, there is a vent hose that runs from the tank to the fill tube just below the top of the fill tube. The vent is a 1/2" rubber fuel hose. The vent hose has a stress point at the tank. So if you notice a gas smell around the fill door, it might be this vent hose.
You can easily access the hose from under the car behind the drivers rear wheel. The factory used those spring clips that you release with a set of pliers. you will need about 18" of 1/2" fuel hose. Take your old one off and measure it to get a accurate length. Slip the clips off the old hose and onto the new piece and then slip it into place in the car. The picture below shows the location of the hose.

Dont just go reefing on the hose; cut it lengthwise off the nipple on the tank and peel it off. If ya bust the solder joint you just dialed up "A ton of work" number... Heater cores work the same way. ws
