Took this off one of my engines. Looks like someone slotted the bracket to make it easier to install. Not sure how well it would work on an engine installed in a car.
Maybe they used it to "hook" the starter on the block so they weren't holding a 30 pound weight above their head?

Way back when I worried about using that bracket I used to install a stud into the block. Something like the ones used for the water pump to clutch fan. This way you could get it onto the stud and bolt it up with the 2 big bolts then reach over and spin a nut on. Slightly easier than trying to find the hole in the block with a bolt. Still a pain in the drain though.
I dunno... Ive always managed to get the motor up in place with with the two 3/8" bolts almost pulled up snug, then get on that bracket. I always try to get all the fasteners started before any honest tightening. The starter on the '72 with big ol' Hooker Headers was by far the worst. Especially with the "fitted" wires to the starter and that damn engine block mounted "wire block". Great idea, but impractical. Had all day to do it, but out on the driveway in the rain??? I can see why this stuff got tossed into the rusty trunk! ws
