Add another 9L4 I had that previous owner put on my 71. I traded it and it ended up on a 70.

Just for reference, here is a '69 Stage 1 disributor (I believe) with numbers 1111962 and 8J12 date code.

Just a guess, cause I have seen both types in these cars, that Buick either used 2 different vendors or their vendor supplied both types of housings. :Do No:

    Dave,

Do you happen to know the body build dates on the cars the three original 2016's you have came from? Thanks for the info.

From 1971 Stage1 build date 09B dist#1112016 0F23 square stem and I'm 99% sure it is original to the car as engine has never been out & car is unrestored.

I will bet that 0F23 distributor was the last production build date used on the assembly line at least until the end of the 72 model year. No one here appears to have a later date. Cars must have undersold expectations. They probably were going by 70 sales so had plenty left over.

    James:

The 9G15 distributor came out of a 09D car.

I'll have to check the others, they're in storage.

I have several other 016 distributors packed away in the storage shed. I'll have to dig them out and send the numbers to you.

I find it interesting that all of John's distributors out of original Stage 1 cars have the square boss and none of mine do, and mine are also all original 70 Stage 1 distributors.....:Do No:

    My 1972 stage 1 was built 10/71.

I am the 3rd owner and other two owners belief this to be the original.

    Thanks

Doesn't make too much sense, huh? Weird coincidence. Forgot too that I have a car I am doing right now that is also an original 70 Stage 1 and it too has the square boss.

I'll keep updating post #5 as information is posted, and try to come up with an easier way to record/post in the future.

From the looks of things so far, all 1971 and 1972 Stage 1's had the June 23, 1970 date coded distributors with the square stem. Hopefully more 71 and 72 Stage 1 owners can post more data to compare.

As far as the 1970 Stage 1's, there have only been four different date codes - 9G15, 9K1, 9K3, 9L4. Of those, both the latest date codes of 9K3 and 9L4 have square and round stems. Two different vendors is certainly possible for the different style, or the change in design could have been made just prior to October and the left over round stems were used up while the square stems were starting to be used. Summary (so far) - no square stems before 10/1/69 and no round stems after 11/4/69.

I still can't believe no date codes between 11/4/69 and 6/23/70 have shown up. :Do No:

    Keep the data coming.

    BUQUICK I'm your huckleberry.

James, I double checked our 72 Stage 1 today, it has a 1112016 4C30 (March 30th 1974) and has the square cast into the stem. No red paint so I think it was a service replacement.

My spare 1112016 is dated 9L4 and it is square.

Interesting is the fact that the casting number is stamped in a different place than usual. its stamped on the thicker part of the housing. If it were installed in a car, the number would be facing the intake:confused:

    heres a pic-

I'm not the original owner but my mostly unmolested 72 stage 1 has a 1112016 0F23 square. I believe it to be the original distributor. I have a couple pics I can post later.
