Does anyone know what the cam specs are for a OEM stage 1 cam? I bought a 70 455 engine to rebuild and it has a stage 1 cam in it that has never been ran. The previous owner of the engine bought it from a GM dealer in 1993 (if he remembers correctly) when he rebuilt the motor but never did run the engine and it sat in a shop since then. Also what would be a close comparison cam from say TA or comp cams? Would this cam be good for a mild street/cruiser build?

It is a relatively small lift cam.

I'm just trying to figure out if it's worth keeping and possibly reusing it for my build or is there something better to use? I want to build just a mild street/cruiser motor

There are definitely better cams for your street build that will give much better performance than the original Stage 1 cam. TA Performance offers a full line for any need. Take a look at the TA212. It is fine with stock valve train, converter and gears.

Yeh that's basically what I've read on here. I just figured if the stage 1 cam I have was going to be relatively close to a newer cam that would suit my build purposes that I would just save the $$ and reuse the stage 1 cam. I'm basically going to build a 70 block with the oil mods, custom autotec pistons to get me to zero deck and close to 10:1 compression,68 430 heads (maybe TA aluminum with enrty porting if the extra funds are available) Ta timing cover with the pre built oil pump, new stock valves, all new bearings gaskets, balancer, flexplate etc. I'll reuse my springs, pushrods, rods and crank. Then take my headers, performer intake, carb, and all the other odds and ends from my 72 motor that's in the car currently.I will leave my trans as is with the b&m shift kit and 2400-2600 converter or will I have to upgrade it? I'm not looking for a crazy strip/track engine just something reliable, strong and has some good get up and go for when I want it. My car is a cruiser mostly. I've read on here that close to 500hp is obtainable with the type of build I'm looking to do.

Why the 68 430 heads over the 70 455 ones? Flow or compression?

Cause that's what came on the engine when I bought it and they have a bit better flow and smaller cc than my 72 heads on my 72 block. If funds permit I'll buy the TA aluminum heads.

Your build plan is very similar to my build. Mine dyno'd at 468 HP with the stock (ported) exhaust manifolds and only 25 deg of timing (long story as to why only 25 deg.). Should you decide to go with a bigger cam you could sell your stock Stage 1 cam to recoup some or maybe all of the cost. Someone will want it.

You will need good head flow to get close to or over 500 HP, simple as that. Aluminum heads are the easiest way to get there. Don't forget about DCR. A true 10:1 compression with a small cam may put you into detonation.

If I get close to 500hp that's a bonus! I've read numerous threads where you've mentioned head flow Larry and I plan on doing the best I can with what I can afford and got. I definitely won't overbuild the engine with incompatible parts just to say I "built an engine". I will continue to absorb all the info I can from you guys and plan my build according to my needs and ACTUAL driving type. That way I'll end up with the best strongest performing engine tailored to my budget with possibilities of upgrading in the future.

I'm still in the planning stages and no parts have been bought as of yet. Just sorting out what I'll keep and possibly use and what's going to be sold off to help fund the build.

I would be interested in the cam if you decide to upgrade.
