Hi all, I have kind of a problem with the dipstick of my 66 Skylark. I restored it over the last 2 years. Trans was completely empty. I filled in the recommendet amount of oil but had a leak so I don't know how much oil is inside at the moment. No problem until now because there is a dipstick, right? Not exactly. There is a aftermarket chinese dipstick installed where the marker is set completely wrong. Even with not enough oil in the trans the filling is about 3 inches over the marker. That also means I have driven the cars with much to little oil inside for a few months after I bought it. Is there anybody with a 66 Skylark equipped with a st300 trans who could measure the "add" and "full" marker from the top of the dipstick or has any other idea how to find out how much fluid is missing? The tube looks original. Thanks for your help and Best Regards from Germany, Matthias
I have the ST-300 from my 1964 Skylark on a pallet. It is still bolted to the 300 V8. I will take a picture of the tube and the stick as it is on the transmission for reference since I am not certain if they are the same. (But I think they should be). And I'll get images of the marks next to a tape measure and also post exact measurements and post them this evening.
Measured the tube as installed in the transmission. Top edge of the tube to where it inserts at the transmission case: 16-1/2 inches or 42cm. The stick measures total overall: 23-1/4 inches or 61.5cm From the tip to the "ADD" (1 pint) : 1-3/8 inches or 2.54cm From the tip to the "Full": 2-1/8 inches or 5.08cm The total between fill and add is: 3/4 inches or 1.95cm From the top of the tube opening where the stick cap touches fully inserted down to the "FULL" line on the stick is: 18-5/8 inches or 45.72cm From the top of the tube opening where the stick cap touches fully inserted down to the "ADD" line on the stick is: 19-3/8 or 48.26cm The part number on the stick is: 1361594 And states: "Check with engine idling and transmission hot". Hopefully, this is enough information for you to compare to your tube and aftermarket stick. Tschüss!
Get a coat hanger. Straighten it out. Insert in pan until it hits bottom. Measure 1 1/2" from end for 1 pint low. Measure 2 1/4" from the bottom for full.
Thank you Michael for the effort of measuring the stick and tube. Thanks for the info telriv. Both ingormations are very helpful to me. Best Regards Matthias
