Any one have any luck changing the color of a buick sport steering wheel? I got a brown one at a good price so I grabbed it hoping it would match my tan interior, well it doesn't. Any chance of color changing the rim grip? if so what product would I use.

I have used SEMS Products in the past on a Pontiac wheel. The prep work is the key.

Thanks, that was my next question. How did you prep it? would not want to really scuff it too much, that would smooth out the grain on the wheel. Just a real good cleaning I would assume?

    Dave,
SEMS had me clean the wheel with their soap & then there was a pre-conditioner I applied. Then the color coat. It was a nice easy project & the results were very nice.

Yes SEM soap. Then a alcohol wipe. (Pre conditioner) prepping is everything . Painted mine White. So I used a good primer surfacer. Very light gray. So the White would not get bleed through. And the paint sticks better.

Use a Red 3M scotch brite pad w/ SEM soap. 40 yrs. of grime on those steering wheels. Only problem with having a white steering wheel grip. I have to make sure I wash my hands before touching it.

If you guys look at my pictures. I painted the aluminum band in between the grip. GS
Emblem Red. It really catches people's eye. I get a lot of questions about it at car cruise.

If you want to do a good job, you can carefully remove the stainless band. Ive done it several times when re-dying wheels. Once the wheel is dry and the paint is cured, put the wheel in the freezer and the band out in the sun. Makes it easier to re-install.

Jason, I had no idea the band was removable. I planned on masking mine when doing the color change. Thanks!
