is there an easy way to remove the cable behind the instrument panel on a 68 Skylark? Is this held in place with a clip? Thanks Matt
As I remember, this is not a clip, last year for screw on, and it is difficult to get off with the dash in place.
'70 Chevelle had a screw (nut) at the speedo. Back in the day, one would unscrew the cable at the head and run for a few months to keep the warranty (5 years/ 60 months) active. Think I ran almost a year without a speedo.
In about 90% of cases, the speedo cable is a major PITA behind the dash. I have been putting off lubeing the cable in the Buchev for just that reason.
Act of God. 30 minutes of patience. And a cut up forearm. Was able to install the new screw on cable. Had to use a paint stick to push the wire harness out of the way with my left hand while installing the speedometer cable with the right hand. Going to buy a lottery ticket now.....
The next generation is even worse. Theres a spring steel clip on my 72 that you need to push on and the cable pops off the speedo. Easy? yeah right! First you pull all the AC stuff out, then pull the dash bezel out. It only comes out about an inch due to the cable. Then get 3 or 4 fingers in the top to relieve the strain and then push on the clip which is tighter than a leather pucker string. Youll learn a whole new dialect of French on that job. ws
My 1969 has a clip I believe. Can you tell from the manual if your is the same? I usually undo it once the speedo is loose and starting to come out. Not so bad as I recall.
Wow i must be doing this the wrong way. I took my dash off and now trying to unhook the whole gauge cluster but theres no room with the clutch pesal and shifter in the way what a head ach. On a 4spd
After 1970, the speedo cables were no longer screw on type into the back of the speedometer. It was too easy to extend your warranty. I know!!
If you have cruise control disconnect it from the transducer, then pull the cluster towards you. Not many had cruise tho
