3rd oil change since the dyno. Maybe 20 passes on the engine. Has great OP with the peterson pump. Nothing in the system 1 filter other than small bits of sealer. None of the sparkle stuff is magnetic but there is something black and like iron powder that sticks to the magnet when swirled around in the oil. Wondering if I should run a paper filter for awhile.

Yes I would do such as it sure will not hurt, but you need to run a filter that will not bypass which most will do even at hot idle oil pressures of only 15 psi!
10 minutes of hot idle with such a filter should do the trick!

I have some K&N filters and a Wix in the shop. which will not bypass?

    Good!
Run one for 10 minutes , cut it open to have a peak and a magnet check , then install another one of 10 minutes of idle time and then cut that open and I hope all is well!

LOL 10 mins of idle time is about a gal of 110

Back the filter bus up here guys..

The "15psi" mentioned here is differential pressure... the pressure difference from one side of the filter media to the other... it is rare that you will ever see that much pressure differential across a filter. Especially the stainless steel mesh filters like the system one.

Folks like to say that happens at cold start, but the engine is almost always being regulated by the oil pump regulator, and as such, there is actually very little flow thru the oil system, and the filter. This is caused by the tight cold clearances in the engine, coupled with the higher viscosity of the cold oil.

Low oil flow demand = little to no differential pressure drop across the filter media, and the bypass stays closed.

Your fine Briz, the magnetic dark fuzz is piston 2nd compression ring material most likely, and it's normal to see that for a while. The Sparkles are typically aluminum, and they often come from the rocker arms. Pretty normal, as long as it's just a few.

Ok, 5 minutes should get all the oil volume thru the filter 2 times round,

Better to be safe then to find out way too late that your new Aluminum heads got shipped/ assembled with springs sitting right on the heads, no?

I didnt think it was that loud but you're right.

Thanks Jim. Do you think I should try to filter it out, change the oil again (8qts) or just let it run for a few more outings?

Bought these heads from Charlie Evans while at the BG swap meet 3 years ago. They were bare castings and had to have everything done to them. I'm running TA 1.71 roller rockers and they do sit pretty close to the spring retainers. Even though I clearanced them a bit its possible they could still rub.

I was just saying in general about things we take for granted.
