Went to replace the fuel filter on my '67 430 engine and there is a small spring and rubber gasket on one end that's deteriorated. The replacement filter is correct, but doesn't have these pieces with it. Everywhere I've looked on line, I haven't been able to track them down. Does anyone know where I can find the spring and gasket?

    David,
The rubber gasket on the paper filter is used for 2 reasons. It does act as a gasket, but it also is part of the filters check valve assembly. The paper style filters come in 2 styles with and without a check valve. The check valves purpose is to provide a one way valve to prevent fuel from siphoning back to the fuel tank when the engine is shut off. Be aware that the check valve style filters can be more restrictive than the non-check valve filters, so keep that in mind if you experience a fuel volume problem.

Remember the spring goes in first then the filter with the filter opening facing forward.

Thanks for the info-I did not know that. If I were experiencing a fuel volume problem, what type of symptoms would there be?
I ask because on a couple of occasions I've noticed an alternating surging forward and then hesitation upon acceleration when climbing a hill.

The car noses over as it runs out of fuel. It will go again when you partially come off the gas. That can happen for a number of reasons. There isn't one thing and one thing only that will do that. It can happen with a fuel pump that is getting weak, a low float level in the carburetor, a restriction in the fuel line, a clogged pick up, anything that reduces fuel flow or pressure. It could be a clogged or restricted fuel filter, but don't assume that is the problem. It might not be.
