Slow Crank When Hot

After taking some advice from the community I decided to upgrade my 72 skylark 350 to an HEI distrubutor. Everything went in and started up without a problem and the car seems to be running better than ever despite a couple of odd problems that suddenly appeared.

Since dropping in the new distributor it has become obvious that the engine does not want to start after being brought up to temp. It cranks very slowly after being driven but will eventually start without further issue.

I removed the resistance wire and ran a new 12ga wire w/connector from yearone but did not reconnect the original bypass wire from the starter solenoid. Could this be the cause of the problem? I was under the impression that the bypass wires sole purpose was to prevent this from happening with the original resistance wire in place only. Any help is greatly apprecited. Thanks in advance.

No, you may have a lot of initial advance, which can make it hard to crank, or your connections at the battery and/or starter are dirty or loose. With more ignition advance, your starter, cables and connections must be in tip top shape.

Thanks for the advice. I set it to 12* initial per TAs recommendations with the distributor but its possible I mucked something up as it was my first time. Cables, plugs, wires are all new so I can look into the starter as well.

Do u have the heat deflector attached above the starter. If not, then the starter is getting too hot which reduces it ability to crank.

Yep, gota have some sort of heat shield between starter and ex. manifold.

Sorry, I'm really not really sure. Haven't looked too far into most of the cars issues. I seem to be creating/unearthing more problems as I go. For now retarding the initial timing a couple degrees seemed to fix the issue.
