I'm using 29.5 x 10.5 slicks on my '72. I have the inside and outside clearance taken care of, but I never hear anyone mention the space between the front of the tire and the front of the wheel opening. At ride height I have about 1/4" or less. Is that enough? I am considering trimming the front of the wheel opening about 1/2" in case the tire grows and gets into the fender. The slicks I have now are Phoenix and they have a slightly larger rollout than M/T's or Goodyears. Anyone else run into this problem?
Jeff The only time I had what looked to be a problem was when I had to much pinion angle in my car. They would start to rub about 1100 feet out and stop as soon as I let off. changed the pinion angle back to were it was supposed to be and I had all kinds of space.
Jeff On my car we cut a "pie" shaped wedge about 3/4" to nothing and pushed the wheel lip forward and re-welded.Unless you're looking for it you don't even notice and it's an easy fix if "originality" ever becomes a concern. BTW you'll probably like those tires, seems the Pheonix?Firestone always work good on heavier cars, quite messy though.
Thanks for the replies guys. Bobb- As a matter of fact, I was thinking about that. I haven't done any "set-up" on this car yet. I just bolted the arms on. I did a quick check when I put the driveshaft in and it was pretty close. I think I'll wait until it's all set-up and then see what it looks like. I had visions of a slick blowout at 125 mph. Ouch! Gary- That's kinda what I thought about doing. Guess I'm on the right track. I've heard that about Phoenix. I've always been stuck on M/T's, but I'll give the Phoenix's a try. Saw your car on the RealOldsPower message board. Wonder what kind of response that will get! :eek2: Have fun.
My son used to run the Hoosier Radial slicks. They don't grow up top and you can run 20 lbs. of air in them. We had 30X10.5 15 mounted on 15X10 Warrior wheels with a 5" back space. This was the car that we raffled off at the GS Nats 2 years ago. Best et thru exhaust was 10.66.
