64 front end always look better to me

  2. well 64 and early 65 are the same and then middle 65 and later is a cross-flow radiator support. Technically they are interchangeable completely through both years

Ronnie, you can probably sell the halo trim if you remove it.

Cool thanks. I like the plain Jane look. How much does the halo trim sell for.

    Depends on condition.

It's stainless, not aluminum (as some think) and can be buffed bright and shiny (but one has to be very careful and understand the "pull" of the buffing wheel, you get no warning before it grabs and turns it into a razor whip).

If it is not creased, or deep scratches, $150-200 . Buffed and with clips in good condition, $400 is a good range to start.

I've always heard the halo trim is made of aluminum. If it's stainless, that would be great, as mine is complete with no dents or gouges. Just a little dull. It would be really nice to be able to polish mine up!

I saw a picture of a '64 one time that had all of the '64 front clip on it except one fender that was a '65. Talk about messed up looking. I guess they repaired a fender bender and didn't realize the fenders were different until after all the paint and repairs were done and started putting the grill and bumper back together. They left it that way and adjusted the heck out of the bumper brackets.

The stainless trim is chrome plated. If the chrome won't polish the chrome can be sanded off and the stainless can be polished but will be harder to keep clean, will fingerprint very easily. Ask me how I know.:rolleyes:

My understanding had been that the side moldings on the doors and rear quarters are stainless and chrome plated, (some call it flash chromed). Pretty sure the fender trim is plated pot metal. Halo sure looks like aluminum though. I was told it is anodized.

The trim is anodized Alluminum. Definitely not stainless.

  13. other than the crossflow cooling vs down flow what is the difference?

The mounting points and dimples sit at a little different location and depth . Grille and headlight doors sit a little different . I have comparative pictures I will see if I can put them up! The center grille / hood latch support is also a little different! It is possible to modified both core supports and grille supports to be used with a little welding and drilling! A big difference also is the trough that the bottom of the radiator fits in! The second design 65 cross flow core support is the best to use if you are not worried about correctness as it will fit stock and non stock radiators! The bottom of this core support can be welded into the 64 or 65 first design down flow core support!

The headlight plates which house the lights and buckets themselves are a little different also!

Unfortunately some people have been sold and got the wrong parts ! And found out after expensive paint and body work that they have the wrong parts on their cars! I have friend who has a really nice 65 special deluxe convertible with a 64 fender on it! It has a really nice paint job on it to! He is working on getting it changed out! Another friend has a very rare 65 Gs 4 speed factory a/c convertible he is working on! I took no pleasure in telling him the perfect rust free , no damage, original paint fenders he had to use on the car were 64 models! The parts are so close they fool even a expert!

Thats where Im at right now. Ive been told just about any later Skylark bottom frame can be fit into place with minimum alterations. The bottom support has really broad curves which limits the width of the radiator itself. I have reached out to several guys on both forums to cut a piece out of an otherwise rotted out core support (bad from battery acid especially!) but no responses yet. I may just hafta fab one myself.:( More work for a stupid issue! ws

If that car is light green metallic, I've seen it at a couple cruise nights around here (northern IL, southern, WI) I always wondered why anyone would even bother to put paint on the car knowing the fenders were clearly different. It's a shame really, that is a pretty nice looking car.
