Assuming a block has not been decked, is there a maximum amount you can take off heads and/or put on a smaller head gasket before things don’t start matching up well with a stock intake manifold?

    Thanks!

Yes. The amount somewhat depends on the existing block, head, and manifold tolerances.

I would be willing to bet JW has that threshold figured out.

.030" to .040" is usually it and even then you may need to make the Intake Manifold bolt holes larger by 030" to get the bolts started.

If your just milling for a good new clean surface then .015" should be more then enough!
Whatever amount is milled make sure that any sharp edges that are left and sticking out passed the head gasket fire ring are lightly rolled over so as to not make a hot spot.

My Stage1SE’s have .040” milled off them. My intake fit just fine when I had them on my original short block. I remember asking Gessler about that, and him saying it wasn’t that much. My current short block is 0 deck. Not sure if JW made any adjustments but the intake fits perfectly with a .032 composite gasket.
