I got my stock oil pump ,and booster plate from TA to day.In the directions it says to measure the gap between the straight edge and the gasket surface of the timing cover. Note the measurement.Add.,004" to measurements when using A booster plate or add .002" when using pump cover only. I'm confused, what is the difference . Directions say idea reading is between .001" and .003" Preferred method is to use A dial indicator ,I have one.
Thanks for the info ,I'm still wondering about the directions saying add more for booster plate vs pump cover. Maybe some one can help me understand .I will post A picture of the directions.
I'm not sure what that is all about. My understanding is the booster plate goes between the timing cover and pump cover. either the booster plate, or the pump cover goes up against the gears. Why the gasket requirements would differ between the two, I'm not sure. I would disregard that and set it up for .002 end clearance.
That's what I think I'll do,just a little confused on the directions .I thought I would post it and see what y'all thought. I haven't set up A pump befor, trying to learn all I can.Do you think wants I set it up ,measuring it with feeler gage .I should put it in A vise and check the end play with my dial indicator.
Definitely. The pump should be set as tight as possible with no binding. If you can get it to .002, that is ideal.
What exactly does the pressure relieve spring do. 40LBS vs 60LBS spring. I'm just trying to learn all I can .
It limits the maximum pressure the pump can develop. It's the pressure relief valve spring. Do you have a Buick Chassis manual? It should have been the next thing you bought after the car https://www.ebay.com/itm/1972-BUICK...ash=item4b373c8f38:g:WRoAAOSwLgNadOTs&vxp=mtr
No I don't ,need to get one.I got A old Chilton manual .I'm new to working on buicks, been working on Chevrolets sents I was A kid .I joined this site, and learned A lot ,and talked to some good people .
That Manual I linked is the BIBLE for your car. It will answer all your questions, and more. It's a valuable resource. They are easy to find and way better than the Chilton.
Definitely following this thread. do you have any photos of when putting it all together? I'm in the process of rebuilding my 350. As you I also have the 212 cam to go in and oil pump rebuild kit, booster plate, etc... I did find and saves an old thread on how to setup the oil pump, but interested to see here how you got along with yours. Sounds like some confusion there about where the booster plate goes, so i'm glad I read this. thanks
