Setting up 9" rear, is this the correct wear pattern?

    hmmmmm

well did you check the bearings too. just to make sure the cups are seated and not a spec of dirt there too. Just the littlest spec of metal or grit can mess it up.
as for running it...??? well I guess YOU could. I would not for my customer. But if you think you have checked it all and richmond wont help...see what they do. noise could be a factor it will definetly ware funning. probably make an oscillating noise at high R's . pardon if spelling if messy. What a bummer. I had a few that were like this to. Nothing I could do just canned the gears. I really do not run it to very may defective gears. Let me know how it goes with richmond and or running them. Jim

I e-mailed Richmond Gear in Liberty SC and this is what I got from Johnny Brown.

"This is not a problem. The tolerence allowed on backlash veriation is .004. I would open the .005 up to .008 and then if it goes to .011 that fine. You do not want the BL any tighter than .008 at the tightest point. The .003 you are getting is a stackup issue. If you have .001 in the housing and .001 in the carrier or spool and .001 in the gear it can add up to a total of .003 to .004. As long as the pattern looks good it`s not going to be a prblem."

Looks like I have no choice but to run it. I will e-mail him back to remind him that this is for 99% drag racing with a trans. brake.

Do I have any other options?

Can you rotate the gear 180 on the spool and see if the numbers change? :Do No:

Or maybe buy a lop-sided shim!

This is the latest from Johnny Brown from Richmond Gear.

"Jimmy, it doesn`t matter if it`s a trans break car or not. You never want to set the BL tighter than .008. If you set it tighter than .008 you run the risk of not allowing the lube to cool the gear properly. Again the fact that you have .003 veriation in BL is within tolerence and is not a problem."

I had thought about rotating the ring gear on the spool and may try that. I will recheck the backlash all the way around to see if it looks like the .003" is in the ring gear or the pinion.

Other than that I will just set it up .008 BL at the tight spot and run it.

I got the housing cleaned, repainted and bolted back in. I am ready to install the third member so that I can order my driveshaft or see if Jeff still has his old one left and wants to sell it.

I am looking at the wilwood brakes now. I sent them an e-mail asking if there parking brake system will work as an emergency brake as well. I want this just in case I encounter the same problem that Bob Makley had.
