anybody ever come across the main purpose of the secondary vertical baffle plate on the quadrajet. anybody experiment by removing it? I'm sure it is a well engineered piece but I've never heard any talk about what it actually does. thanks

Do NOT leave it out for any reason. The q-jets secondary system was designed to create a low pressure area when the secondaries open and that plate is needed to improve "signal" and provide smooth/steady fuel flow from the secondary fuel supply nozzles.

Quite a few years ago I was trying to help a local guy tune his Marine carburetor. He did the build himself and was having issues reaching full rpms under full load on the lake. I decided to take some time and get a free boat ride and custom tune his carb.

It ran like CRAP at full throttle no matter what secondary metering rods we tried in it. I took the carb off and took it to the shop for inspection. The only thing we found wrong was that divider was missing. We put one in it, went back to the lake and the boat immediately reached full rpm's under full power without any issues.

We were then able to custom tune it to full potential with secondary metering rods without much effort......FWIW......Cliff
