    Dan,
PM me, and I will give you my phone number. Then we can talk over the phone, and I can list the info I need.

    Duane,

Which Dan do you need here? Also, Dan (wormwood) was the first and only one so far to PM me, and take me up on my offer to check it out. I feel its only right that I report my findings to him first. If he passes, I will then post my findings, along with alot of pictures, here on the board. I just need anyone in the know to LMK about the numbers. A local Buick guy once told me that he believes this car is not a GSX. But the guy that owns it told me it is and I have no reason to doubt this unless numbers prove otherwise. I want to clarify what I said about the car earlier. I said I was unimpressed. The reason for that is best explained by my lack of funds. You see.............I see it as an ordinary Skylark with a stripe. However, I can understand how cool it would be to have a car that you are not always explaining to people that "Its a clone". I like Wormwoods idea alot. Put a killer BBB in it. I bet it would only jack the value. Plus, whats there to explain? Someone checks your car out and asks "Is it real", the answer, heck yeah....its a GSX!!! Its hard for me to think in terms of these cars cause I'll never own one. And thats probably why a 350 GSX doesn't impress me. However, to each is own and I will go over every aspect of this car.

    Floydsbuick,
I was referring to you, as you said you were going to look at the car for someone else. Maybe I will call the owner and get some info, it might save you a trip. If the car isn't a SCO car it could not be an X.

    Hey Duane,

I remember at shows this guy had some paperwork with the car. Also, whats this SCO? You can save the phone bill if you want. Theres no trip envolved for me. He lives about five miles from me and I will see him Tue or Wed. I figure that even if this car doesn't sell now, that It will turn up again and raise discussion in the Buick community. So I might as well confirm it as real or not. Also, since tags can be changed, could someone with an original GS/GSX send me some good digital pics of factory tags so I can try to determine if they have been switched? Thanks guys!

Without documentation to prove this car is a true optioned WA5
GSX ornamentation package car, I would not buy it.If it is in fact real, than modifying any muscle car by adding options or changing a 350 to 455 only distracts and devalues the car.
Talking about plain ,I have documentation of a 72 GSX 350 car that has virtually no options.Car is Fire Red with White interior buckets console, WA5 GSX ornamentation package and power steering and thats it!
Dog dish hub caps, standard chrome mirror on drivers door ,no guages ,no posi, no rear sway bar, nothing at all.Just a base no option GS 350 automatic car with the WA5 option.
Car was sold here in Canada so that is why I have GM of Documentation.

    Duane:
i appreaciate the offer, but floydsbuick offered to check out the car for me, and i dont think two people calling up the owner is necessary. True the car may be a plain jane buick, but being that there were about 10 71's produced in this color and no other ones known to exist today make it prety unique.

I, however, still request Duane's input on how to authenticate this car. I don't wanna mess this up. Granted, Dan (wormwood) took me up on my offer to check it out. But I want and need anyones input on verifying this car.

Guys here's what I will do,
    I won't call anyone.
First get ALL the info from the ID plate on the fire wall, and write it exactly as it is shown, the full vin number and a copy of any/all paperwork. Ask if the tank was dropped, and see if he has a copy of the buildsheet from there.

Also take a magnet to make sure the ID plate on the firewall is aluminum and not steel.

Then if you want info from me PM me for my number and I can give you my opinion, based on the above info.

The ball is in your court, I am out of it now.

    71 GSX

I happen to have a similar situation in regards to documenting a 1971 GSX. I have spoken to Duane twice about this car, and he has been great about telling me what to look for and if there is anything that can document it as an original GSX. My problem is that it needs a complete body off restoration. Without the documentation to support it, is it smart to invest $20-30k for a car that has no documentation to convince anyone that it is what I say it is? I would love to build this car, but am having a hard time deciding whether or not to do it. It is without a doubt a 71 platinum Mist GS, but has no motor or trans. No emblems (or holes that have been filled) in the fenders, it has the fat deck lid torsion rods (to support the weight of the rear spoiler) but is missing the original decklid and spoiler. It does have the "GSX by Buick" dash plaque, with the deluxe black bench seat interior with the 3 spoke sport wheel , and sport mirrors. I don't even know if it was a 350 car, or a 455 car (it had small block Chevy motor mounts tack welded to the frame).

My question to everyone here is whether a non #'s matching car with a 455 in it is worth as much as a correct #'s matching 350 car (like the one in question above)? This is of course if mine is eventually documented somehow (please help me Duane!!).

Here is a pic of my cowl tag, not the one on ebay. It does have a low body #, indicating it was a SCO. I don't want to take over this thread, so if someone wants to move my post, feel free. I just thought I would chime in on this subject, and provide a good picture of a SCO cowl tag.

    Rusty,

I don't have any digital pics of the car, and it is in storage now. I took it all apart after I got it looking for the documentation, and never found any. It needs a total resto - remember how bad the silver cars in the 70's faded due to the sun? Well, this car must have been outside in the hot Texas sun for it's entire 30 years before I got it, and it looks pretty bad. As I said, if I can document it as a real GSX, I will rebuild it from the ground up. Duane recommended I hang onto it for a while to see if the microfiche reel from 1971 shows up. Does anyone know who has that very important piece of Buick history?

    Mark,

Since your old car wasn't documented or #'s matching, what convinced you to build it as a concours level car? I was able to get this car cheap, but it is going to cost a lot to restore, and I don't know if it is a smart thing to do. You have given me hope, but I am still uncertain if there is a market for undocumented, non #'s cars, especially since most of us Buick guys have to fight the battle of ridiculous inflation with the Chevys and Mopars.

Thanks for any info you are willing to share on your old car. Feel free to send me an email or PM if you would like.

    Thanks again.

If your concerned about valuation and what other people will believe when it comes sale time then I think the answer is an easy no.
What has you convinced that it is real?
If you really beleive this is a real X, and you really want one then the answer is an easy (though spendy) yes.
These things are only what the documentation(and rarely the numbers) say they are. Getting $35k for an undocumented car is the exception (it must have been a spectacular car Mark) and not the rule.
