I think that the laws regarding seat belts have more to do with saving money than saving lives.

Sure, "seat belts save lives" is a good marketing phrase, and saving lives is a nice side effect of the seat belt laws.

But I think the laws were enacted
    1) to protect carmakers from liability issues in accidents involving injury.
    2) to afford the state an opportunity to fine you and make more money.
    3) to ease the burden (moneywise) on insurance companies who pay for care after accidents
    4) to protect the state from liability issues involved in injurious accidents.

    not necessarily in that order.

I wear my seat belt because I have an interest in my personal safety, not because "its the law". Just because something is the law does not make it "right".

I dont really care if anyone else wears theirs or not. I think its their decision, and respect their right to decide for themselves.

of course, if the laws requiring seat belts hadnt been enacted, maybe the insurance companies would hike rates to protect their profit margin....maybe they hiked their rates anyways.....:Do No:

Well, this IS supposed to be a free nation. Freedom of choice.Freedom from tyranny-including law enforcement, etc. There should be no laws for seatbelt use. It should be up to the individual wether to wear a restraint or not. Laws are designed for control and revenue through citation of code violation. People should be made aware of the graphic results of non seatbelt use, though. I wear one anytime I get in a vehicle, even before the seatbelt laws came about. Accidents can happen way too fast. You never know when. Everyone should use seatbelts. It should not be used as a cashcow for municipalities and states. Some places have outrageous fines for such a minor infraction. I don't agree with that at all. The same thing applies to idiot motorcyclists that don't wear helmets. They should have the right to be safe or not.Their choice. But don't charge them money for it.

But Britain IS a totaltarian police state. There is a law, mandate, tax, and survielance for everything over there! Not to worry, though,USA is going that way fast. Children should most definitely be made to wear seatbelts.

Okay, I'll bite! I think the seat belt law being mandated is a good idea for the most part because of poor drivers. It's a shame that in many cases it is use to generate Tax money like the tolls on road ways that have paid for them selves over and over again, AL.

Hmmmm. Jail for a seat belt violation?? Do I hear police state? In order for a CRIME to be commited, there has to be an injured party. In order to be put in jail, a real crime has to be commited. Geez, there MUST be some sort of "other" law going on. Oh,yeah. There is a corporate "law"-policy. Your state, county, city, town, etc. are all incorporated business entities. Corporations.Contracts. Yeah,it must be contract law operating in the courts now. International Admiralty Law of the Constitution. This must be what Roosevelt and the Supreme Court did in 1938,changed all of our courts into Maritime Courts. Must be because of the legal bankruptcy, which is still in effect, that Roosevelt declared in 1933,when he gave up our country to the "creditors" in the bankruptcy. Yep,it sure was a lot better and freer in the "old days". Everyone used to have rights. Now,EVERYTHING in our lives are a privelidge granted by the government. Thomas Jefferson and George Washington were right.

Go to jail for that!!! Cos your obviously a bad man and need locking up! I dont think so!!! The law is an arse over here, get caught speeding 4 times ( minor speeding 2mph over) and you'l get banned and have to sit a retest. And your insurance will be sky high to boot! But get pissed drunk steal a car crash it after a long car chase, kill a passer by and you only have a 12 month ban?? Blame it all on your childhood and you be sent on a all expense paid holiday in Spain, all footed by the tax payer he nicked the car off in the first place.

If you go to salvage yards looking for parts ,its very easy to see which cars had passengers not wearing seatbelts. your going to do what you want. Bring back natural selection. Get rid of circuit breakers,GFI's,take airbags out of cars, rearview mirrors, turn signals, brakelights, put lead back in paint. take smoke detectors out of homes.get rid of inspections on homes, bridges, buildings, airplanes, cars. These are all Laws that save lives. yes there are times when someone survived because they weren't wearing a belt, but most do not survive.
I have done two 360s trying to avoid accidents and I felt that the fact I was belted in kept me in control(saved my A$$)

Without reading all the post I will give my useless 2 cents worth. I wear belts and have since I got my first car at 18, a 57 Chevrolet Belair. I always drove very fast and sometimes somewhat reckless. I wanted to protect my self and sliding around curves and other fun stuff I did required I be belted in to better keep control of the car. I have never been in a wreck so I can't tell you how much they help. I also drive a racecar and love the feeling of being tightly belted in a car. Now should I make you do it. I would like to see everyone safe and not injuried but it's your butt.
A side note, I spent 2 weeks in Honduras this summer. They drive like crazy down there. No signage to speak of and anything goes. BUT, they strictly inforce the seat belt law and NO driving while EATING or TALKING on a CELL PHONE. With the way they drive I thought this was a little crazy.
We have too many people telling us what to do now, but so many will get hurt and depend on the government to take care of them at my expense.

It's an un-American thing to do. It's unconstitutional. It's good for us, but there's a lot of stupid stuff we do, they don't outlaw a lot of the dumber things we do. I guess Uncle Sam is looking out for us, though. It's just tough love.

There are two separate issues: Should you wear seatbelts? Hell yes. They do save lives, including mine in a stock car racing accident in the '60s.
Should it be law that you have to wear them? No! This is supposed to be a free country. If you wish to collide with your instrument panel at 50 mph, have a ball. It's a Darwin thing.

If you refuse to wear a seat belt:

Be a man about it and also refuse to wear them when you do your driving test......:Smarty: !!!

This thread will still be going when automobiles are flying! LOL

I do wear mine often now but I still don't think I should be forced to. I guess the bigger issue for me is now that they are writing citations for using curse words in public! Where are we headed anyway?

Good idea! A good way to do it is to go with a '65 or older car that has no seat belts in it!
