...cashier's checks have become subject to scamming as well. We need a little help from regulators...preferably making banking take more responsibility in process...

Open a dummy account and deposit the check for.... ever. After a year or so, withdraw it. If Achmed al Ibrahim el Jabbar Jaboody calls you on it, say you simply forgot and send the parts. If he kaks from too much dung smoked goat liver, so be it. ws

In the OP it didn't say whether the parts were shipped or not. If not, decide what you are comfortable with; if so, tell him that when the parts arrive back at your house you will return his money.

No, then he'd be out the part once the check scam does finally play out. Shouldn't have deposited it to begin with, but hindsight...

Tell him you said no checks and upon checking with your bank, they said it could take 90 days to be sure there's no funny business & you'll ship the part @ that point (or if somehow legit, refund if you decide to).

What's the worst he can do? Sue you? Chances are he'll go away once he realizes you know it's a scam and eventually, the $ will disappear from your account.

In the meantime, in case it is a scam to simply get your bank account information, I would only keep a couple dollars in that account at most or close it & open a new one. The bank will let you know when they're out $950.

Either fake (m/o's too) or you can stop payment on a real one.

Thats my point. The check is already deposited so that ship has sailed. Banks are usually aware of all these scams and can likely give as good or better insight than a bunch of screen names on the interwebz. Why would you not talk to the banking institution thats central to this entire fiasco....

I meant "no" to shipping the part. I should've made that clearer.

Other than to debt collectors who can then attach the account (hence don't pay them using your bank info or cash a small check you get unsolicited), I never understood it either, but it was mentioned earlier.

As far as I know, it isn't.

Funny that so many people are so protective about their CC #, yet when they go out to eat, they hand off their card to the waiter or waitress. It then disappears into the back for a bit. They can not only get the exact name as it appears on the card, but the card # AND the three digit code. Pretty easy to find the billing address now too.

I completely understand why it's not a problem to give out banking info. exc. in the case I mentioned.

Sorry, I do not, however, know every scam out there. Maybe there is one where that info is useful or maybe along with other info out there on the dark web about someone, their bank info adds the missing piece of the puzzle.

A scammer or hacker or a terrorist only needs to find one opening whereas the defense to those needs to consider infinite possibilities.

Sorry I bothered commentary on this thread @ all. I don't even come on here much anymore & if so don't usually read the non-Buick threads.

Sooo... there's Achmed in a mud house with a light bulb hanging from the ceiling with a plug for his crack top. He kites you a check that YOUR bank deposits. YOUR account is credited. After X amount of time you think this rag head is gonna call in a stop payment. Thats a joke. Take his money and spit in his eyeballs. He's just gonna stoke up the **** burner for a stove with extra camel pies and cook a good meal of goat nut soup... Hold the dandelions please!

Better yet, dont fall for this nonsense unless you develop a rapport with him, like 3-4 communiques. At least edog has a common neutrality factor involved. Do they charge sales tax in Mombasa yet??? ws

You could always ask for a phone # and talk direct. What a concept.

I scammed myself once....got a $3000 bank check in a guy's name to buy a car.....decided not to when I saw it in person and tore the check up.
Took me a few years to realize that the money never went back to my account. Apparently banks transfer to a separate account of their own then if it never gets drawn on they claim it. IT DOESN'T AUTOMATICALLY GO BACK INTO YOUR ACCOUNT like I thought. I figured it was never cashed so no money drawn from my account.
