I'm just getting started on this restoration project (1972 Skylark Convertible). Today I pulled the plugs and oiled the cylinders in preparation for a restart this weekend. I pulled the old battery in order to install the new battery. I expected to find some rust on the battery tray, but I didn't expect to see the rotted metal under and around the battery tray. I've found an online article that discusses a fix, but I wonder whether there are alternative approaches (pardon my inexperience). This California car is not otherwise a rustbucket, although the right front fender has begun to decompose where it meets the rocker panel. Suggestions appreciated.
Good lookin rust you have there.. Not sure if just the available patch panels will fix that without some extra fabrication. If it were me, and note you may be different, create a post in the parts wanted section for the passenger inner fender and a core support. Can get a new battery tray and hold down from the aftermarket. Depending on who's around, you may be able to get decent parts that take less time to restore then patching in new metal. Best of luck.
Or a whole core support may even be easier since you will have to remove that one to repair it. Battery trays are available at Rockauto.com
