Sorry- I know there's a million threads on this but this time I'm confused.

I've seen ones that needed the aluminum check ball at the bottom of the accelerator pump well, and also those that didn't even have a place to put a check ball. The ones that needed it had an opening in the center of the pump well, as well as the obvious casting below the float bowl indicatating that the passageway existed (I think the later models ditched the casting for this as it was obsolete - as with the check ball).

This time the passageway enters the pump well from the bottom/side (not center). I swear I'd need a check ball because the passageway exists (as does the old style brass inlet screen outside of the well), but the pump return spring sitting below the pump would seat itself directly on the check ball. Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of a "check ball" if it can't freely float up to let fuel in?

Maybe it just doubles as a "retainer" to keep the ball in the correct spot but still lets fuel pass? The spring is fairly light gauge wire. Sorry I don't have a pic. I was sure it had to be there so went with my gut feeling and buttoned it up. There was no ball upon removal, but there were several missing clips and washers upon disassembly so I don't really trust it anyways. Carb is a 7041142

    Thanks

Just thought I'd post this in case somebody ever searches the forum for the same reason...

Finally found a cut-away diagram of the exact model I have (without ball exactly in center). Looks like the spring actually does rest right on the check ball in this version.
