72 Electra (455) @ 45 mls/hr all standard, no maintenance history.. suddenly backfired and stalled. Starter turns freely, but no sign of life. Dark now, so will have a look at it tomorrow (spark, timing). Wild guess: timing chain? Coil? (in Medford / Shady Cove, OR right now)

Sounds like some kind of ignition - keep us posted and have a safe trip. Say hi to Nicole from us.

What type of ignition system do you have? Could be coil or condenser.

I had the exact same thing happen to my '72 Centurion....timing chain.

When you add backfire into the mix I would agree........timing chain. Hope it's less.

  6. sounds like timing chain , I had the same thing happen in my 70 GS350. was running fine, turned a corner and it backfired and died. nylon upper timing gear broke apart

Quick way to check is to pull the distributor cap, crank the engine and see if the rotor spins.

or line the timing mark up on TDC and see if the rotor points to #1 tower

Checked all the above. Installed new coil, points and condensator: up and running!!
Took a close look at the points: there was the culprit: the screw to set the dwell was wobbley/didn't sat in the thread. Should have checked the dwell (2 days prior) not only in idle; was set 30* but I assume it changed along the way the next 400mls orso. Still a slight misfire in idle; I expect the distributor has had its best time (unfortunately my cellphone provider in the Netherlands has issues; can't call or be called since yesterday just when you need your phone the most, so therefore replacement has to wait). Hope we're fine for the next 3 weeks (although you never know with a bought unseen 45 year old Buick)
Thank for all the above comments!!

We're going up further north to Puyallup, WA (Buick car show) and probably after that to Denver, CO for the BCA Nats and from there back to CA...but it all depends how the car will hold the next couple days (gaining trust). Also the weather could play a role (no AC) in the route.... our plans can change every day...freedom!

Wondering if you would make it all the way to the east coast

Briz, yes I have a 24' enclosed trailer and have been all over the east coast and mid-west in the last 9 years with the 1932 Buick going to AACA and BCA meets. Thinking I should do that with the 1921 Buick I just bought once I get it tuned up and paint touched up. Would not mind driving the 67 Convertible or Sportwagon on a long trip. We have family in Boston and need to get there this summer if possible. I think you were in Springfield, Missouri at a BCA meet several years ago?
