I get a fair amount of tire/road noise from the rear of my 71 Skylark 'Vert. I suspect that the rear window well liner is the culprit as it is a lighter material than original. Has anyone come up with a solution?

There are new cars that now use the stereo to provide "activE noisevcancellation" .. first thing I thought of when I read about it was how to adapt it to our older cars.

.. short of a loud stereo to drown out the road noise, there are tires that are significantly quieter than others. Not sure of brand or size, and it will probably affect performance compared to Comp TAs or Cooper Cobras but if that's your main objective ..

I just ponied up for a new pair of Cooper Cobra's last year on the rear axle. I'm thinking some sound insulation in the rear quarters and trunk area and some way of adding another layer of material to the window well pocket.

The top down is the cheapest insulation

I put Toyo Proxes II on all four corners, and it helped a bit. But what really made the difference was adding a trunk liner kit. My exhaust is still louder than I'd like, and I'm checking into alternatives, but the lining has, so far, made the biggest difference.

Can you tell me more about the trunk liner kit?

Took excess carpet, carpeted the backside of rear seat, both sides of framework...good enough to quiet it a lot.

I've been promoting it for yrs. House insulation is cheap & if you go dumpster diving most times it's free when a home is being re-modeled. Just ask 1st. Under the back seat on the floor. In the armrests on the side of convertibles. Behind the back seat. Even UNDER the well above the top motor. If you don't like it pull it back out as it cost VERY LITTLE or was FREE!!!! Doesn't need ANYTHING to hold it in place.

    Bought it here:

it was pretty easy to install (had to get a few "Christmas tree clips" at the body shop) and I've been pleased with the result, both in sound and appearance.
