    what rear ends were offered in the 73 rivieras, and what were the stock gear ratios

    9 3/8" Buick in either 2.93 or 3.23. If it does not have the stage one option package it appears to be a 2.93.

  3. Jim what about the 3.42 ratio found in GS Rivieras

    GoldBoattail455 462 -> TH400 -> Posi

    3.42 positive traction was only for 1971-1972 Rivieras. 2.93 was the non-posi for 1971-1972. The positive traction 3.42 could be ordered without the GS package. In 1973 the positive traction changed ratio to 3.23. This was optional on any Riviera, and came standard on any GS equipped Riviera.

    Mostly just used gear sets. There may be some NOS out there but they are just about chicken lips. You need post 70 9 3/8s also.

    Yes, you will have to find them used....or NOS if you are good at finding chickens with lips, as the Parts Ferret said above:grin:

    read slowly and carefully.

    NO one makes ANYTHING for the 1965 to 76 9 3/8's ( and you can't trade anything between a 71-76 rear and a 65-70 rear ) or 8 7/8's rears except for bearing sets and control arm bushings. :Smarty:

    :bglasses:

    if you check out the 'Boat' section of the board you'll see several sticky threads where we've been over this ad nauseum.

    your best bet for 'short' ( high 3 series ) gear sets and posi diffs would be an Estate wagon or other GM equivalent ( Chev/Cad/Olds/Poncho all shared rear axle assemblies ), although you can't use the entire wagon rear assembly in a regular car because the wagon's used leaf springs.

    the most customizable option is to steal the entire rear axle assembly from under a small block B body ( Le Sabre, Centurion, etc ) car. these were standard 8 1/2" gear sets and you can order ANYTHING for one of these.

    you'll probably be better off starting a new thread in the "Parts Wanted" section than trying to piggyback onto this thread.

    Note: One more change for 73 was that the 3.23 performance axle was not standard on the regular GS as in previous years. Pretty confusing because in 73 the Stage 1 and GS were separate options. The 3.23 posi came with the Stage 1 option and not the GS option. :Do No: A few GS cars were ordered with the stage 1 option so in that case, a GS would have the 3.23. In total there were 1234 cars built with the Stage 1 option but not all were GS cars.

    Buick guys: Riv and full size car owners. I am going to try to look into producing a 10 bolt 8.5 centered with the correct axle tube mounting point as low cost as I can and see what I can come up with. I will try to solve this problem for guys that do not care as much about NUMBER matching as compared to actual driving and racing aspect. Ok? Hang tight. I know where there are about 3 rive rears 70-71 72.

    How different are the 67-70 rivs as far as mounting points go. Does anyone in the area of Mid to north ohio have early housings were can TAKE MEASUREMENTS and or use the rear to experiment on?

    Check out 85 up caprice wagon 8.5 10 bolts, control arms line up as far as mounting points go and wheels bolt to the 5x5 bolt pattern... and they measure out the same flange to flange..just a little small imho...

    also check out same year model big pontiacs like the catalina
    good luck..
