There are companies that make repop firewall tags for the real old cars. You have to send them in a copy of the title and registration in your name along with a picture of the original tag with the id number matching the number on your title. Then they restamp a new one for you. Som companies aren't as thorough on the proof aspect. Here's one company just to get you an idea of what's out there.

Cowl, data only as far as I know the only way to get a VIN is through Highway patrol in your state. Here in Missouri you get a separate tag showing a salvage vehicle. Data tags do not have the VIN on them and can be repoduced

Before I would make any reply I would ask "Why"? Why do you need, or want a new VIN tag to put on the dash???

Yup. DOT or state police are the ones to ask around here. We don't have a highway patrol.

I second the "why" question? There may be an occasional valid reason for needing a new one but in the majority of cases I would call the reason fraud.

There is in fact a very complicated method to procure a VIN tag on a current production year vehicle that involves the government, the manufacturer, the insurance company, the collision repair facility, the lean holder, the dealership and the owner.

Someone asked the question as to why GS are so much more expensive than Skylarks; it's the economic principle or supply and demand. The VIN is the primary method in which most models of vehicles are differentiated from their more sibling vehicles.

It goes to the authenticity and value of a particular model of vehicle in the marketplace. The example I will use here is that this is the reason that GSX's and Stage 1 convertibles are valued at 10 to 20 times as much as a basic Skylark. IIRC, the production numbers indicate that less than 5% of total buick A-body production was GS or any sort; thereby the other 95% was basic Skylark production.
