im replacing the top for my 66 skylark any one have any tips or tricks that will make this easier for me? any specific tools i should have or anything like that?
Get a service manual Just about everything you ever wanted to know about replacing a convertible top is covered in the factory service manuals. The body by fisher book is a good example and has a whole chapter devoted to the convertible top. They are an invaluable resource for a restoration and are available from Year One, Classic Industries, ect. :TU:
Yep i got one for my car but still havent removed it from its package maybe i should take a look at it? ou:
I finished mine last summer and must admit that while it is not easy, you can do it. A few things I had to have were: 1. Stainless steel staples ( Lowes) 2. Ratcheting combo wrenches SAE 3. Good staple gun ( Lowes) 4. Sufficient air pressure to drive the gun 5. Get new tacking strips before you start. Mine literally crumbled when I removed the old top. If you need any help, or have specific questions, e-mail me. Russ Waters 1970 Skylark Convertible 455 wclc@Bellsouth.net
Russ What is a good source for the tack strips?? I have the same problem with a top I am planning to do.
my advice ...... read the book one million times , each time visualizing every move in your head....... then you will only have to refer back to the book one million more once you start the job... here is what i kept tellin myself when i did mine ..."the guy who originally put this top on was just a regular joe... not a magician .....but unlike me he was probably not sober." ALSO .... when it comes to stretchin th top .... let her set in the hot sun ... the vinyl will be more compliant. rotsa ruk!!:TU:
