So this morning, upon arriving to my office, I realized I lost my keys. On my key ring are my Buick keys...the only set I have. I see replacement blank keys readily available online. My question is can the dealership cut a new key for such an old car by simply using the VIN as they would do with a newer car? Or will I have to get an auto locksmith involved?

Hoping they turn up at the subway system's lost & found within the next couple of days.

Not by using the VIN... But, if you have the original IBM punch card that came with the car (I don't know how long GM continued using the IBM punch cards), it has the original codes on it, and a true locksmith can cut the keys from that. Other sources of the codes COULD be on the original bill of sale. If you can access the interior by opening the door, and disassemble the door panel from the door to gain access to the lock cylinder, it SHOULD have the codes on it. However, there are two different keys used on the car, and I do not know how to get the glove box open if it is locked. The trunk can be opened USUALLY by taking out the rear seat and turning the lock from inside the trunk. If you have an electric trunk opener, you can pop the trunk open that way. Some cars use different keys for different functions: "A" key works for the door, trunk, and glove box, with "B" key working the ignition. Other cars may be a different combination, but almost ALL cars after the mid-60's use two different keys.
Sorry I couldn't be more help. Hope your bill of sale has the codes.

The original locks have the key codes on them including the glove box. You will have to remove the door panel to access the lock cylinder.

...assuming keys original...codes are on key knockouts, Glove Box Copy IBM card, Production Order Body - Final, lock cylinders, or possibly written somewhere on original owner documentation. Without codes, locksmith...

Thanks for the helpful replies. Hopefully the keys are returned to the subway system's Lost & Found. I will check for the keys next week before taking any further action.

    What a pain...and a lesson learned.

UPDATE: The lost & found process worked. I went to the central Lost & Found office and the lady handed me a HUGE bin full of keys that have been turned in. I emptied the bin one set of keys at a time. About halfway through the pile, I found my keys!!

    Super thankful.
