Thanks for the replies. I've learned something new. :TU:

I'll take a look this saturday to see if I do need the clock delete, if so I'll get back to you John.

Yesterday I replaced my clock with the Autometer tach I had lying around.

I'm sorry for not posting the how-to here as <a href="http://letmetellyouaboutmycars.blogspot.com/2007/02/clock-to-tachometer-conversion.html">I just did that on my blog</a>.

The PicasaWeb album starts <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/martin.edelius/BuickGS1972/photo#5030248202176027618">here</a> but all the images are linked to from the blog article as well (and often better explained too).

Here's a shot of the final unit installed in the instrument cluster:

All I have to do is figure out how to get the instrument lights in there again as this was a very snug fit but I have a couple of ideas. :TU:

This is what I am doing to my cluster. I am awaiting a 160 mph (Autometer 3 3/8 gauge)speedometer for the center hole and the water temp is just installed to make sure things fit. A fuel level gauge will go where the water temp gauge is now.I used the blank plates and kept the gauges under pointed lenses,so cleaning willbe an easier task.I am mounting my tach on the roll cage crossbar.

@Azeem: Thanks. It turned out quite nice indeed although you can easily see that this is a new installation compared with the original instruments. Then again, I'm not going for 100% perfect this time around.

@Bignasty: Looks good. I'd love to see the final result.

Consider polishing your instrument lens to remove the scratches and the cloudiness.

    Thanks for the tip Jim.

I still need to install lights into it so I'll try and do that at the same time.

    Any special method to it?

    Larry,

I have an old cluster with clock and speedo (I sold the gauges).
Do you suppose I could gut the pods to mount Autometer in their place? I'm looking at Quad gauge pod, 160mph speedo (200-4R) and 8k tach. I might have to use my old idjit light pod for the quad gauges but that's no biggie.
I'd like it to look like yours on all 3.

    Gary,
If you gut the housings, I'm sure you can figure out a way to mount the gauges in the housings, and then the housings bolt up to the dash as stock. Be creative, that's what i did. You might be able to fit some smaller gauges together in one pod. The 3 3/8" tach and speedo should fit like my Tach did.

Only problem is the fuel gauge is 240/33 ohm. Might be able to get that to the Buick send unit specs with some math and resistors.. suggestions Larry?

Hmmm... also says "Includes fuel level sender that reads 240 ohms empty/33 ohms full." How does that work? Inserted into the sender wire, into the tank?

Polish for plastics are sold sometimes in grades depending on the severity of the scratches. Over there I do no know but you might check with your general aviation airport FBO and pilots. They use a version of such a compound on their windshields.

You might need to retrofit the Autometer sender into the Buick gas tank. Probably not too hard. E-mail Autometer with that question. That's what I would do.

its been awhile but i think you need to move a wire in the harness from one place to another when addind a tach

Check this one out and keep the clock.

I'll be having one of these on the pillar whether I replace my stock tach or not. They have LVL 1, 2, 3. Stewart Warner also makes one and it's in Summit catalog.

Thanks for the tip but you're about a month to late.

And I personally don't like the look of an external tach - no matter how accurate it is.

Ok by me. I personally really like the pillar pod mounts. Have 'em in my Dmax and will have them in the GS.
