I have a 1972 Skylark 'vert with a bench seat. I thought that I would remove, clean and, perhaps, dye the belts. It should not be a difficult process. I figured out the retractable covers, but haven't yet figured out how to remove the covers over the anchor points on either side of the tunnel. I don't want to break anything, so I'm asking here.

Ive seen those covers with a "snap" grommet type of thing, on the underside of the cover, facing the carpet side.

They wrap around the belt, but are also secured with he bolt through the floor. I can dig out the ones from the convertible I'm working on a shoot a pic of the snap/wrap.

Bingo. Front belts off aside from the retracted belts. They seem to have been well preserved. Removed belts now soaking, dishwasher later. Next: which black dye to use and how? Thanks for the help.

Edit: Searched around and RIT dye seems to the recommendation.

I used the SEM Vinyl paint dye. Works great just need to work them to remove stiffness.

I would NOT use RIT . It will bleed out onto you every time you sweat against it. (At least the blue RIT dye bleeds from a mid 80's GM nylon based belt...) I speak from experience! I HIGHLY recommend using something like SEM vinyl dye, after thoroughly cleaning and drying the belts.

I agree with flh73 and Steve. My buddy tried die(s). They didn't work.
