Can a Trailer be registered in another state that the owner does not live in ??? I'm talking about a 24 foot enclosed car trailer rated 10,000 lbs .

Address on registration would be sent to a different state

Some would saying doing this is illegal. With that said, I’ve had a car trailer and boat trailer registered in Maine for a long time. 5 years of Maine is about 1 year of NY. No one (law) has said anything.

It amazes me how many semi trailers I see in Georgia wearing Maine plates.

Wisconsin is still living in the past; you don't even need lights as long as the tow vehicle lights are visible (mine do for safety tho). Plates? Single and double axle (car trailers too!) aren't required unless for commercial use or >8000lbs GVWR (don't quote me on the GVWR part) but a semi driver neighbor told me that and he's pretty credible. I have two single axle trailers (1 boat and 1 utility) that don't even have titles. Out here its not uncommon to see BIG (as in two lane wide) farm equipment rolling down the road. ws

Good thread. Wondering does Maine require annual safety inspection for a 10k dual axle trailer?

That's What I'm attempting to do Jason . I don't think it would matter if you use the trailer in states other than Maine.

Seems like your asking permission to break the law. Just to save money?
I have to register my trailer in the state which I reside. What happens if you're in an accident, get cited for unregistered, improperly registered and then your insurance company refuses to pay for trailer damage or damage the trailer makes? Not saving money that way.
I know for a fact, NH looks for out of staters who use thier camp address in NH, to illegally register thier vehicles and when they find them , they tuck it rite to em. Jim

I don't need permission to break the law . There's enough of that going on now. Seems like we are talking about 2 different things. I'm not talking about a a self powered vehicle like a car or truck , I'm talking about a trailer that will still have my home address on the registration. Trailers carry no insurance . Its covered by the towing vehicle.

Take a look at 18 wheelers most of their trailers are registered in ME , I have been doing this for many years and have never had a problem , Been ticketed while pulling a trailer for speeding and seatbelt never even a mention of the ME plates you will not have a problem

That's what I figured Bob . I've also seen a lot of trailers registered in Georgia and Alabama . Maine is the most though .

Its possible that principal state of use is allowed for individuals as well as commercial use as far as trailers are concerned. Semi - trailers are a different animal, commercial use. My 18' tilt bed is registered in my home state, it's principal state of use. .. Jim

Private use trailers, yes, that is true. Commercial trailers? Nope. They must have liability coverage. And if they are being towed by a commercially insured vehicle, the trailer being towed must also carry liability insurance. Got into an argument with one of my (former) customers one time. He went with another agent that told him he didn't have to insure his personal use trailer being towed by his commercially insured truck. Found out the hard way that wasn't so...so did his agent that got brought into the lawsuit for Errors and Omissions.

Mass nails me for $200 a year for my 24 foot. Maine might be an option.

Just an update on this subject : I just finished dealing with this company and what a pleasure . People there knew what they were talking about completed my registration including a title transfer that was in another's name , registering for 5 years and tag for less than $130 . . They do 1 , 5 , 10 or longer registering .

I live in Wi. and plated my 28' trailer when first bought. haven't since, just kept the plate on and traveled everywhere. Don't know if I'm just lucky?... There is no advertising on it.

And from what I understand if what inside makes an income, and is a certain poundage (winning races and getting paid) then you have to plate it and stop at open scales.
Ask me how I know. In my snowmobile racing days we hauled two different trailers together, one 28' tag pulled by a motorhome and one 48' fifth wheel trailer pulled by a dually, both with heavily advertising decals on them from our sponsors. We got pulled over for passing the scales and had to have them scaled. Lucky we had two guys with us with cdl's.

Yep. My trailer has a Maine tag. 5 years for $100. NY can go....you know what. NY wants $100 a year.

Perfectly legal. I used mainetrailerregistrations.com. I emailed them the info on Monday morning. I got my plate on Thursday.

Kinda reminds me of a Delaware Corporation. A lot of U.S. flagged ships are homeported there, plus its compliant with Jones Act regulations.
