Hi, I am in the process off refreshing the pearl white interior of my '70 GS.
Could you please help me with 2 things which are not clear to me:

    1. The arm rest bases, did they also have the metallic shine similar to the vinyl on the door panels? The 16'' ones are only available in black so I need to paint them.

    2. The head rests apparently have been painted many times over and over again. You cannot see the original surface structure of the vinyl anymore. Before I add another layer I would like to remove as much of the old paint as possible. Now, what would I use best for this purpose?

    Thanks!

    1. Yes
    2. Lacquer Thinner, and continue to use this until all the paint is off. Then use your bonding agents and paint as directed.

Actually, too much lacquer thinner, if will soften the vinyl surface and make it sticky, temporarily - been there, done that.

Exactly, that's what you want to happen. It allows the bonding agent to really "stick" to the part so the paint sticks and won't peel off if the head rest hits the steering wheel.

Now I am not talking about soaking it in lacquer thinner, but applying it several times until the paint comes off.

I used sem phantom white vinyl dye with a real light coat of Rust-Oleum metallic pearl mist spray paint. It matched the pearl interior in my 69 pretty good.
