I have a machine shop willing to rebuild my original carburetor for $130. Should I do that or should a by a new one? uzzled:
Do they know anything about Q jets? What do they do in a rebuild? Can you use a premium rebuild kit? (a vendor on the on this board sells them)
Depends on what you are looking to gain. I'm not a racer, just a cruiser that likes to mash the go pedal now and then and chirp the gears. I had the original q jet rebuilt by a local carb "pro" on my 70 GS 455 and I wasn't happy with the result at all. A 43 year old carb can warp and only a expert q jet rebuilder can fix them right and it isn't cheap. I then Bought a brand new edlebrock thunder series and it was perfect right out the box. that was 10 years ago and it still works perfectly. I love it, it starts up quick, electric choke works perfectly, never bogs, and the car pulls hard and chirps all gears. The old q jet never did that. Truth is the car runs better than anything else in my driveway. Racers on the other hand swear on the tuneability of the q jet and they think they are the best. Me, I prefer not to toy with a carb and rather turn the key and go.:3gears:
If you have the original correct quadrajet, YES you should keep it. Jim's question is valid(as always) on does your shop really know the quadrajet and how thorough will they build it. Big difference in "putting in a kit" and a true build, so double check to make sure.
Absolutely correct. At $130 youre getting a soak and a kit installed, and its likely a standard tomco kit with thin gaskets a black pump cup. If you dont want to mess with the Qjet again, send it to a specialist.
The attached file shows a little comparison I did for a "kit" verses a true build like Ken and I both do. We've been doing this a while and there are other good ones too. If you aren't concerned about "number correct" on your quadrajet, I recommend a 71-74 year quadrajet for you. They were 800 cfm and your 455 will really like it. The 70 carb was rated at 750cfm. I'm not at the racer level, but I have friends that are into the lifestyle. I would like to keep my car original, but I would also like to make some improvements. I'm trying to determine what adds enjoyment and value. It's a real American muscle car. Both Mark and Ken who posted above are both outstanding Buick guys who have both rebuilt dozens of carbs for members of this forum with many happy customers. If it were me I would want to help support those who help support the Buick community and this board

Thats a Buick 350 carb from 1970. It will definitely be a bit too lean for your 455. Better to get the right Qjet for your application. http://www.everyday-performance.com...s.htm#!/~/product/category=578011&id=32939619
