I have my rear stripped down except the upper control arms bushings that are in the pumpkin. The chassis manual speaks to taking the upper control arms off, but I don't see how to remove the bushings and replace them. I'm assuming they are pressed in?

Also, anyone have the MOOG part numbers for upper rear control arm bushings? I found a number on Rockauto.com, but I'm not sure if it gets you a set for one arm complete, or if they are individuasl, meaning four would be needed.

    Thanks.

they are pressed in. There are tools available to do the job. I made my own tool with a piece of 1/2" threaded rod and some large sockets.

You can also bring your rearend to someone with a big press.

I recommend the tool from HR Parts & stuff, however. (You can even do it with the rear still in the car!)

    Thanks Guys!

Any chance one of you guys have that tool close? I saw the pic on HR Parts n' Stuff website and I think I can have one fabbed here at work today. If someone could measure the inside width between the ears that fit over the rearend, I could figure the rest out from there.

    Thanks again!

Ken you can take them out without any fancy tools. Use a drill and a 1/4" or 3/16" bit. Force the bit between the rubber and the metal outside shell of the bushing. Start the drill and let the bit follow around the metal shell chewing up the rubber. Do not try to hold the bit in one spot. Let it go round and round inside the shell. Keep doing this until the bit has chewed up the rubber as it goes around the shell. Take a small mallett and the rest of the bushing will tap right out. The new bushings should also tap right in. Hope I made it clear enough. Mike D.

I am going to try something like this, but I can add that I had to hammer the crap out of my poly bushings in order to get them in. I hate them, so now I am going w/ spherical. No job is ever finished!

I had my rear end out of the car so I just torched them out. Made a nice little fire.

Cool, but putting the new ones in is at least half the battle...

    Andrew,
You know you want to see those poly bushings burn. Burn, burn in h....
Have you put the new upper bushing in yet?

If the rear is out of the car, use a ball joint press (large C-clamp). You can get them from Autozone loan-a-tool program.

A little late, but if you are still playing with this, put the new bushings in the freezer for a few hours first. The cold shrinks them a few thou and it makes a big difference in how easy they go in.

    Thanks Tim. :TU:

You are definitely not too late as I am just taking it apart to have the rear blasted and painted. The bushing reinstall is a ways off yet.

    Good tip.
