Rear end swap

    Trying to switch my 70 skylark from a peg leg to a posi. The car is completely stock with a TH350. My question is what is my better choice to add a posi to my current 8.2 rear end. Or remove an 8.5 from the junk yard and swap it out. My ideal idea for the car is to be able to drive it everywhere. Live in so cal so I want to be able to drive it to San Diego, Vegas Santa Barbara etc.

    Swap it out with a 8.5 and remember to get the drive shaft also. The 8.2 and 8.5 have a different length driveshaft. You have far more choices on a rear gear with a 8.5

    The nice thing about that swap is you don't have to mess with the existing E brake, brakes, and backing plates. All you have to do is pull the axles. The BOP rears are bolt in axle. Pull the axles, wire up the backing plates, drop the rear, and replace, then re install the axles.

    Well going that distance - if you have a 2.56 2.73 2.93 it will be best for your freeway hikes. Any V8 will have enough power to do a burn out in any ratio ... Long as you did not put some big harry thumper cam in the car that has no low end for crisp fun torque and throttle response.
    Just installing a posi to the same gear ratio if fairly straight forward for most guys that can turn a wrench and have common sense of tools. Slide measuring calipers and a dial indicator will get the job done.

    So you really need to check your ratio you have in the car? If you like the ratio just posi it up.
    I can get you posi units for the 2.56 2.73 2.93 ratio
    NOW if you are going steeper ratio like 3.42 or 3.64...(which will not get you back and forth very nicely north and south in CA... Higher RPM and gas guzzling) I would switch to the 10 bolt 8.5 rear more steeper gear choice and a lower cost.

    As far as strength goes...for what your doing any rear will work fine just make certain it have new bearings and put together correct and BOTH rears will serve you very well.
