i put a 2004r czf with d5 convertor from an 86 monte ss
i left it stock just changed front and rear seals and filter
it stalls at 2500 - what a difference over a non stall
i still dont use 4th cause i lock at about 1500rpm at 65 (still have 2.56 gears)
trans has been great the 2 weeks its been in (about 800 miles)
had to have it sitting almost on its side to go in though (i have ta headers that i left on during the swap) that was about only issue
    i love mine

I swapped one into my '66, replacing the stock 2 speed. Along with 3.90 gears, it really woke the car up. ( stock 340)

Are you planning on re-gearing the rear end too? The OD is pretty useless with anything under 3.42, IMHO.

If I was running a big block, I'd stick to a 3.08 to 3.42 and run a TH-400. The extra torque from the BBB will allow a less aggressive gear. Not worth the extra expense and hassle of the swap.

My theory is the same for manuals....small blocks get gears and a 5 speed. BBB gets 3.08 and a 4 speed.

    That's just me though:TU:

My research agrees with what you have discovered the hard way. The 200-R4 is not for our powerful torque monsters. The 400 is a great transmission but its lacks overdrive for comfortable highway use. The 4L80E is built tough with overdrive but its 100 pounds heavier than the 400. Check out the article below in Hot Rod magazine on the 4L80E transmission and a couple other sites for anyone considering a transmission swap or modification. Its not easy or cheap to get the results we are after.

I run one with a supercharged 455. It is time to get a better conveter. The one I have is due for a freshining. Will add a billit forward drum.

There are only a few builders I would trust to build this tranny. For me it is a local guy I have know for 20 years. The ones I can think of off hand are Vince Janis, Extreme Automatics, CKPerformance. For converters go with PTC or Edge.
