Yes it shouldn't be here, what is next. Stolen Buicks for sale, ready for paint. Any dam color you want. Restamps should not be sold here. And Steve sorry this is on your thread, you have a real one. Hope you get big $$$$$$$$ for it. Pat

A lot of good points were made here fellas and I think we could beat this to death, if we already haven't.

I've updated the link in post #2. :Comp:

    Enjoy...

Just one more point I'd like to make to BIGNASTY....you refuse to sell parts to me if I buy one of donny's restamped distributors???? Unless you've got an NOS 246 carb, I believe you don't have any parts I really need. If you want to teach me a lesson, do it in a mature manner: Educate me. Until now, I had always enjoyed your posts, and considered you a pretty cool guy, even when you were bignastyTOYOTA. Until you educate me, I will consider rebodies, engine/trans/rear/VIN/dataplate restamps to be dishonest, and reproductions of normal-wear items to be legitamate. To be honest, I don't really need the 246 carb, because my car came originally with a 247. They chose to pop a Riviera carb on it, rather than stop the line and wait for the correct numbered carb. I also don't really need a 2016 distributor. I am the fool who traded it in as a core, because I had no clue how important these numbers would become to some people 20 years later. My car doesn't seem to know the difference. It never lost a street race with the wrong carb AND distributor on it, including HO455 GTO, 440-6 '70 Challenger, LS6 4-speed, and it cowed the Shelby's and Hemis that didn't want to play.
Tell you how big I am, I will still help you out with parts that you need, and I have got a BUNCH. Dan

    Dan,
I understand your point exactly. Here is what I would do to rectify this situation. I would also stamp something either a letter or number on the distributor,be it inside or on the back side so it could be identified as a restamp. Not a tough thing to do and it would be an honest thing to do as well. I am all for numbers matching and can totally understand the plight of getting the correct part number. I guess it ticks me off the most that when people who deceive people get big bucks for a non original part.I am not saying any of the people here would go out and try to sell this as an original piece, but if they would happen to sell their car and the next guy after them sells it then we have a snowball effect. When Dustin sold his 246 carb, it was a big deal,as it brought good money. The NOS 71 GS grille he sold was a similar case. What people didn't know was he paid 3,500 for 2 rusted out pieces of junk which we had to haul home and strip to make about 1,000 bucks. The carb and grill sold for about 4 grand...Hardly a great profit. But, the parts went to deserving cars.I have a 73 GS 4 speed car that was missing the carburetor when I got it. Its a 7043245 stick car carburetor. They only produced 365 4 spd 73's in all and 92 were Stage 1's.So, I was looking for a carb of less than 273. It took me over 10 years to find one close enough to my build date and I was lucky enough to get this from a fellow V8 member. I know what you guys are going through. I am sorry for coming off so harsh in my last post and I didn't think it through. I guess you say things you really don't actually mean when you are mad. For this I apologize to all offended. I guess we are coming to a time that the parts are just not available anymore and we will have to understand that we have to accept we can't just find rare parts and will have to adapt. In my opinion, if you do something like rebody or restamp or add all repro parts,it is what you have to do. I only hope that we will understand that the hardest parts we need aren't being reproduced and need to find ways to make the parts or whatever. As for a 246 carb..I have access to one and I am not sure it will be ever put up for dibs as you never know when you will stumble across a 70 Stage 1 car needing one.Again, I apologize for my statements.

Apology accepted. For reason's of decorum, up until now I chose not to get involved in this discussion. I realized that much of what I have read has simply been knee-jerk reaction based upon emotion. However, what was insulting were the statements that were made questioning my integrity: "I am not impressed that anyone would do a restamping thing to make profit. It wont be long after this auction for the trash to start selling their restamps if this makes good money."

Let me respond to this by saying that I'm not doing this to turn a profit. Anyone who knows me personally knows that I don't need the money. When I came across the initial four blank distributors, I thought I would do the right thing and offer them to fellow board members. Other blank and re-numbered distributors and carbs have been sold on this board for far more money, so obviously there was a need. The response was overwhelming, so I worked on, and was able to, secure more blanks. If it were a money thing, I would be selling them on Ebay. My belief was that nobody on this forum would use these distributors to misrepresent their vehicles. Unfortunately, there is no way to control what future sellers might do with the parts. Should we stop selling firearms legally because some future owner may use one to commit a crime? You can't legislate morality. I have never, nor would I ever, take advantage of another person. I sleep well at night.

Here's an interesting anecdote: One of the board members who was most outspoken about my lack of morality has purchased two distributors from me outside of the board. Unethical? Perhaps. Hypocritical? Definitely.

C'mon guys, honor Steve's request, it is his post about his distributor for sale, you should at least let him have his thread, and start your debate in a new thread!

Actually, it's his Distributor...and it was a useful discourse...I am bidding on it, but have no illusions that I will still be on top when the snipers get through with me. Dan

:blast: what the v8 site thinks, whoever that is ?????,there is absolute right and wrong, reguardless what any man says or does, even every man and woman on the supreem court(spelling)will stand before the supreem judge one day for their decisisions,if the next owner of the restamps,gs or otherwise, does not know its a fake ,then the transaction is fraud.period end of argument.the gs world has hit a new low, maybe its time to cash out of the hobby at current high prices, because of crazy insane parts prices, the crooks are among us ,to bad there use to be a time when the gs community was fun, but its not anymore:( :( :(

I'm new to Buicks, but have a 68 and 69 Camaro which I think started this whole re-stamping, cloning (or faking) craze. Us Camaro people joke that more 67-69 Z28s exist today than GM ever made:( It might be true. Look on EBay and it's hard to find a plain V8 Camaro and it's easy to fake Z28 and SSs.

My view of the re-stamps is : why re-stamp it if it's not going to benefit you or a future owner in some way.? You essentially make a numbers matching clone which is just crazy. Just like Camaros, if they don't have paperwork backing up thier claims, I consider it to be a clone.

I have a 65 Riv GS Clone with a matching 401 LT block and I also have a real LX Block. When you see the price differences between a 401 Riv and a GS Riv it's tempting. I can't look someone in the eye and shake thier hand while being dishonest - and I'm in sales:laugh:

I think these debate threads are great - even though this wasn't supposed to be one. Maybe a new forum area for ethics and political debate since it's the season:grin: I could learn alot on politics since I hardly follow it. It's nice to see where the fellow car community fall.

I disagree. I know the winner, and he is a stand-up guy who needs the dist for his documented, all original sheet metal, 4-speed, AC car. He is also looking for a carb, and I may just make him a deal on one. It is the last part he needs.

It's easy to find fault, but it seems very difficult for people to step up and help someone in need of something. I would suggest that we all withhold judgement about people's motives until they give you good reason to judge.

    Very well put, Mr. Jones.

Every time I see one of these auctions, I thank GOD the guy I bought my car from said: "I have a few extra parts in the basement if you want to take them too."

I bought this distributor with the intention of using it on my 72 Stage 1 but decided it would still not be correct since the date code didn't match.
I didn't buy it as an investment, but not complaining about what it brought since the money will be used for more Buick parts. I thought what I paid was crazy money back in 1995!
Just glad someone who really needs it will be putting it in an original car, not trying to legitamize a clone, recreation, fake, or whatever you want to call them.
I tried going the good guy route before, you know selling something to a "friend" at a really good price because they needed it. The part was resold within 2 weeks for double what I sold it to him for!

Not to reopen the can of worms, I thought those interested would be interested in noting a distinct difference between Donny's stampings and the original 2016 distributor in this auction....Donny uses a "fat" 0 with curved sides, and the original uses a "thin" 0 with straight sides. I don't know if this will hold as Donny hones his skills, but for now it looks like a reliable way to tell the difference. Dan

    Dan,

I have seen original distributors done both ways but I have seen more with the wide 0 in the part number and the narrower 0 in the date code. That is the reason I do them like this. This isn't a long term project anyway as my supply of blank distributors is tenuous at best and will probably be exhausted soon. I was just trying to help out a few other board members who might not want to drop $2200 on a distributor.

WOW Steve, I had said I hope you get big $$$$$$$$ for it. Dam, how about bringing a pickup bed full of iced down beer to Bowling Green. We could all get drunk and really start bitching about them restamps. Just kidding, Buick parts sounds better. Pat

Item was paid for. Sale complete. I talked to the new owner and he seems to be a good guy. I hope to meet him at the nationals and personally deliver his distributor.
