V8ian I would want to see more belt wrap on that alternator. Your going to be working it to the max with only 55amps to begin with. Unless this is a bare bones off road vehicle or something I'd want more then 55amps for sure. Electric fuel pump and fans are alot of current...lights etc. That alternator you have there looks like a Nippodensa or Bosch and you should be able to get one with at least 70-80amp output.

The car is sort of bare bones, working on the basis less is more performance, especially as im using a 215, every little bit helps,
Fortunatly the alternator seems up to the job as I have been running the same alternator on my present setup and not given my any problems over the last 2 years, the alternator is NipponDenso, Bosch dont seem to make small neat alternators, I think you are right about the belt wrap, I would like more but after looking around the local wreckers, there are some cars that dont seem to run much more than 90degs of contact, Then, I think there is the thing of traditional V belts over PollyV belts which offer more grip than V belts,

You should look at some timing belt idler pulleys. There are alot of cars with them that are smooth and you can get one that is small diameter then maybe you can drill and tap part of the block just above the alternator to give you the extra belt wrap.

I Dont need to drill the block to fix the extra pulley, just need to make a horseshoe shaped bracket to come off the 2 mounting points on the alternator so you can bolt a small timing belt idler onto it.
Another option for a small wrap is fit a bigger pulley, the alternator seems to be at full charge with the engine just over idle, 1400rpm, put a bigger pulley on, you increase max power speed needed to drive the alternator, but reduce the loading needed from the belt, as the engine is very rarely below 3k, I can see it as an alternative.

Here's some pictures that i took sometime over the last coupe years. Kinda shows the serp setup on a 350 Buick in an 88 Mazda B2200.

i'm so jealous of you.. sbb 350 doesnt clear the steering shaft in a toyota pickup nor s10s..300 clears but they're hard to come by

    serp setup is nice though!

I know i rule.:bla: It's was close. I have about 3/4" between the shaft and manifold. Headers are out of the question. For the passenger side manifold i had to "massage" the firewall in about 2". I looked under the hood all summer long and said to myself, there is way to much unused space under this hood. Lets put a big ass turbo under there to fill it out just right.

All of the brackets and accessories from the 86-7 GN will bolt onto the front of the 350. The tensioner needs to be clearanced slightly for the distributor. At least in a mid 80s G-body, the A/C compressor looks like it will just **barely** clear the fittings for the power steering box. I may end up having to make some short right angle fittings for that, or better yet, I'd like to put a Sanden style A/C compressor in there.

I will eventually take some pictures when I get closer to bolting it all together. No, it won't be this week (or probably, this month..) :)

read it closely, looks like he is selling a bolt kit no pulleys try gbodyparts.com for stock gn pulleys or try march pulley kit 4220 for vbelt

Why Serp set up. May be not on a Buick engine but I know that there was testing done awile back on Chevy 4.3 and 5.7 all things the same the V belt set up made more HP than the serp set up. What are you using to adjust the belt the alt or are you using a spring loaded tensioner

I was just looking at your Mazda P.U. And what you have got is a multi groove flat belt it's not a serp set up. A serp set up is when the belt changes direction and/or wraps around an idler pulley. And the only reason the car makers started using a serp belt is to save space and make it more compact. But I still thing what you have there is cool.

Maybe we could purchase just the pulleys from the march 455 kit and make any bracket needed to fit sbb

small Chevy truck stuff modded to fit. Waterpump pulley I believe was a problem, as it didn't fit and bolt pattern was different. I believe they used a ford pulley

Exactly. I run an aftermarket Ford water pump pulley from an under drive kit but I went with that particular one because along with the '86/'87 GN crank pulley, the pulley ratios match up to the stock ones almost perfectly.
