These plugs have about 1k miles on them. I changed the plugs when I got the car about 2 months ago. The original plugs had an orange tint to them, so I put new ones in, and now they have an orange color also ! I'm not running any octane booster, just B.P. or Sunoco gas 89/ 93 octane. Anyone seen this color before ?? The car doesn't burn oil, no loss of antifreeze, actually runs great ! Ideas ? 1st pix #1 cylinder, 2nd, pix #8 cylinder
I've only seen that one time. I was running way too hot Champion plugs in my '53 Buick right after I first bought it and they all turned red. Your problem may be unrelated, but it may be worth it to double check your heat range. Sean's advice to get a wideband is good, however, as it's pretty much the only way for an average guy to really know where the AFR is with modern gas.
Agree with TrunkMonkey; although I usually saw that on plugs as a result of gas from California, and that was in the mid 90's... No heat discoloration, no detonation 'pinging', Clean other than the 'orange tint'. Plug one DOES seem a bit white on the center electrode, but that could be the photo, as it seems more like a shadow. What style of ignition system are you running?
I don't have access to a a/few ratio gauge, wish I did. They are the stock ac Delco plugs and I'm running a stock points ignition. Thanks for input everyone. I think I'm going to finish this tank of gas, swap out a few plugs and try gas from a different source, and see what they look like.
It's MMT, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methylcyclopentadienyl_manganese_tricarbonyl Typical deposits from that. I don't think it's a big deal.
Thanks all, after doing a google search, I believe it from an additive also, just wonder why my plugs in my truck have never looked like that ? Then again I only run 87 octane in it. They just looked REALLY orange , lol .
