Hi all. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the GSX Rally Ride Option was. I have a 72 that I am cloning into a GSX, and I believe that the Rally Ride was an option. What would I need to do to duplicate that option.

    Gary,
Basically, .970" front sway bar, .875" rear sway bar, boxed rear lower
control arms, and a brace that ran from the rear upper conrol arm to the rear lower control arm. There were also firm ride handling spring rates. That's about it, I believe.

To my belief the ralley suspension was not GSX specific.

    Yup,
It's on the 70-72 Order form. Guess you could order it on any Skylark or GS

I was looking at the copy of a 70 GSX Wholesale Car Order Form and it lists the following:
A9 GS options included in GSX :
H-6 Ralleye Ride Control Package Rear Stabilizer Bar- front and rear Firm Ride Tuned Shocks-Rear Firm Ride Springs and Rear Lower Control Arm Assembly. Hopefully this helps.

sounds a lot like F41 suspension.

Yeah, it's the F41. Includes boxed lower control arms. If you don't have them, OPG sells a kit to box.

F41 is the UPC code for the Rallye Ride Suspension package, which is also Buick sales code H6

Trust me - sales codes, UPC codes, and cross referencing them both can be confusing at times :pp

OK,thanks for the info. I went and got a 1.25 swaybar from a 76 Trans Am and the boxed rear lower control arms along with the rear sway bar and upper brace out of a 68 442 from a local junkyard for $50.That takes care of that part, but one thing I can't figure out is how to duplicate the spring rates. Does somebody like Federal Mogul or Moog make new ones that would do the trick. I like the factory ride height(stance)of the GSX. I've never really liked the lowered look and would like it to sit the same way it would have come from the factory in 72. Thanks. You all have been a big help and I think I am allmost there. :beer

don't get moog springs. I had a really hard time finding replacement ones for my skylark. I tried GS ones and heavy duty skylark ones and they fell out of the car if suspension completely relaxed) I tried skylark normal ones, also too short.
all of the springs were between 1.75 - 2.5" short of the uncompressed size on a Moog quality controll drawing. if you go moog, get the cargo coils they're 14" long and i hear people on this board had good results with them or GSCA apparently sells some good ones. (id go with the GSCA ones if I were to do it again) I ended up with 69 chevelle convertible springs (same rear spring on the 4door chevelle and skylark) I think they will be to soft for the ride im looking for.
but were long enough at 14".

I have installed Moog springs from www.espo.com on two 70 GS cars ( a coupe and a convert.)and Marco has the same on his 70 stage 1 convertible . All sit correctly. Cargo coils in my experience do not allow these cars to sit in the stock looking level position.

    Rear Springs

    Jim,

I too am having the same problem Nate said that he experienced. My Moog springs are too short and fall off their perch when the suspension is fully relaxed. Did your springs fall out when the suspension was fully relaxed?

don't get me wrong I believe they all sat correctly I only checked the ride height with the convertible springs and the GS spring. I had about 7.25" from the floor (level) to the bottom of the frame at the point where the lower suspension arms connect to the frame. this was only 1" taller than the springs I removed. and they were new springs w/o any sag in them. (after a year I'm not sure how they would have been)

here is another problem. the GS spring was supposed to be 13.9" and the standard skylark spring was supposed to be 12.9 the pairs that were sent to the autoparts store were 12" flat for the GS spring and 12.25 for the standard skylark spring. :puzzled:

and all fell out of the perches. the shocks are monroe sensa trac shocks and only have one shock option listed for skylarks, chevelles, gto.

I'm building a cruzer not a concorse car but I have safety as a high priority since i drive mine daily when the white stuff isn't flying and put about 12k miles a year on it currently.

I have CC501 (cargo coil) springs in the rear, and my GS appears to sit level. Maybe I'll get the 'ole tape measure out when the car comes out of hibernation and check the ride height to factory specs...

Hmm, I might try the GSCA. It would seem that they would know which springs to get since they deal with these cars exclusively. Thanks for the info, I probaly would have never thought of calling them. Marco, are the Moog CC 501 springs for the rear only or are they for the fronts to. I need fronts and rears. CC stands for Cargo Coil right. Aren't cargo springs a stiff spring since they are made for the extra weight of cargo? How does it ride? I do like Moog products. I used all Moog suspension parts(ball joints, bushings,Etc)when I completely rebuilt the suspension. Good stuff.

    gary:
i have a set of cargo coils in my 72 gs & have no problem. the car does not sit high in the rear. cargo coils take effect when u start to load the car be it with fuel or cargo. they hold the rear height better.

This is my understanding of the variable rate springs as well.

    Gary -
I've had my car out only about 5-7 hours total since the suspension rebuild and so far I am extremely satisified.

The front springs are a different part #

it takes a couple of weeks for the springs to set themselves and the car will drop somewhat.

The shop manual and assembly manual will have dimensions for checking ride height and where on the body to check it.

Marco, I asked this question once before, guess it got lost when the board went down, anyway could you tell me the part number of the front springs you used. I know the rear ones are Moog CC501. I like the way yours sits. Thats probaly real close to where I would like mine to be at. Thats a very nice car you have. Does it bother you to drive it knowing the value of it? I've allways liked green. I like the fact that your car doesn't seem to sit to high or low. Thanks!
