Anyone ever convert from the steering box and linkage to a rack and pinion unit? Looking for advice about this project for my '78. I have not done much research yet but all I've seen so far is a manual setup as in a race application which is not what I want.

Flaming River may have those....but very pricey.

I would check some racks at the yard...4th gen f-body, t-birds, mark VIII, etc.

Bert.... im not an expert but the 75-79 x-bodies have a "front steer" style steering system (the steering system is in front of the A-arm). which is a good system. not sure you will gain anything by switching, i dont know for sure but before you do any modding, i would ask around. if you want to improve the handeling of your car, do the obvious, sub-frame connectors, polyeurathane bushings, thick sway bars. ive done it to my car and it handels prety amazing now.

Yes, it's front steer. I was thinking of possibly updating the steering with an r & p. It may not be worth it. I was planning on upgrading all of the rubber to urethane along with the rack.

needless expense - i'd keep the recirculating ball system with linkage, just keep it clean and greased..

The best R/p for just about any vintage car will be the Uni-steer brand..they're the only company that added the correct geometry changes per platform.

bad things with r/p is no ones offers a kit with stock geometry, so if you want to pro-tour/restomod your vehicle with tricked out drop spindles/tubular control arms..or stock spindles and tall balljoints...you get double the geometry corrections, which also isnt good .

    something to thing about
