If your thinking about Lebanon, don't waste the time trying to get your helmet through tech. Get a snell helmet. The first thing they usually check is the helmet and then the belts if your car needs them. If the helmet is to small it can be rough on the ears.
A wise man (My first service manager, actually Japanese. I still call him Miyagi) once told me: "You got a 10 dollar head? Get a 10 dollar helmet." That has stuck with me......
Some tracks let you rent helmets, Atco for one. Get a helmet the correct size for you. With a helmet you kinda have to learn to drive again. DON'T FORGET IT ONLY TAKES ONE TIME TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE FOREVER. Tom T.
I used to race a front engine dragster in nostalgia events. It was built as a top fuel car in 1969. I ran it with an injected alcohol configuration, Did it for 11 years. One day at Cordova I watched a guy with a nice new front engine car making a licensing pass. In the lights, in the right lane the car just slapped the wall.....hard. Roughly 180mph. Tore it up pretty badly but did not go over. The guy was unconscious when they got to him, but he came to a few minutes later and they carted him off to the ER. I went to his pit later to check on him and his car and saw he had all new safety gear including a state of the art Simpson helmet. The side impact against his roll cage split the helmet ear to ear.....! It did what it was designed to do. The driver was back at the track 3 hours later ........ Buy good gear!!!
Yeah in NJ helmets required for ALL cars regardless of ET. (NJ state law, supposedly) My son had to rent one there....EEEEK, thing was nasty and nowhere near SNELL anything....
I know it is a small investment in protecting your life, but what bothers me is my helmet is in perfect condition. I believe it is a 2000. I could understand if it was cracked or the foam was disintegrating, but it is mint, and now it’s useless. It would be nice if they could recertify it. Shame to throw it away, seems like a waste.
there is no excuse for no safety. crashed after the lights over 10yrs ago, still remember it and the damage. not fun.
First few years I drove with a yard sale open face helmet. Was never asked about it. Later I started using my full face bike helmet. Last yr a tech guy looked at it and said no go. Bought a open face from Summit and have not been asked about it since. Now my belts, a totally different story. Every time. Never been turned away cause of it but only 2 years on a cert and they hardly get used 20 -30 runs in that time frame. Last yr a tech guy crawled under my seats to see how the center belt was connected and said I had them all wrong. Made the changes he requested. Had other tech guys never ask to look under the hood or in the trunk. Just depends on the guy and the track.
What do you guys recommend as a decent brand helmet that doesn't break the bank? Open or closed face? Steve
I myself a huge supporter of tech,..I wish we had tech at our local races, and we especially need it at the Nationals there are alot of HACKS out there that are just butchers when it comes to putting a car together and have no business on a track
This one is affordable and SNEL https://www.ebay.com/itm/RaceQuip-2...-SA-2015-Rated-Gloss-White-Large/253813319384
I went to the local motorcycle dealer and bought one. It was cheap and they had it in stock. The shop owner sold a handful a year to racers and knew just what I needed. It was nice to try it on too.
